Re: Your favorite CDs this year

"At First Light" by Michael McGoldrick and John McSherry. Don't know if it came out this year, but I bought it this year. Far superior to either 'Wired' or 'Fused' by McGoldrick.

Jaysus! Didn't realise there were this many CD's out. Ha! I thought there were only a few but this McGoldrick guy sounds like he's worth listening too. Has he done a Sharon Shannon thing and gone a bit Jazzy or is he pure Irish?

Re: Your favorite CDs this year

He dosent really play jazzy but a lot of the backing on his last 2 CD's is jazzy or funky as he likes to say himself.I myself think its absolutely class!!! Some people might disagree but everyone has there own opinion.

The ''Tunes'' CD with Gavin and Shannon is fairly tradiotional.Deffinetely worth a listen.

Re: Your favorite CDs this year

"Tunes" and "Wired" aren't traditional at all. You should avoid them if you're a purist.

My favourtie recordings bought this year:

Angelina Carberry "An Traidisiún Beo" (banjo with box, guitar, piano)
Marcas O'Murchu "O Bheal go Beal" (flute with bodhran, guitar)

Re: Your favorite CDs this year

I have not got any trad c.d's for a few years however I got a flogging molly psychoceilie c.d. from someone this year, take away the trad instruments and they are a punk band. If you take away the overdriven guitar and drums they are a folk band a bit like brush shields meets stocktons wing what a load of s**t however I am told they are massive in the states along with bands like dropkick murphys and the tossers it is a very strained version of irish music if there ever was one

Re: Your favorite CDs this year

I have to admit to being a purist. I don't like Coolfin or anything like that and I did hear some stuff from Sharon Shannon that I found to modern. Avoid Dropkick Murphys lads. Its Woeful!!!

Think I might go out and buy something from Alton or a Gerry O'Conner CD.

Re: Your favorite CDs this year

What is a purist? How do you define it? I'm worried I might be one. Is there a test? Should I be ashamed if I am one?

I believe there's a 12-step programme for that kind of thing...

Re: Your favorite CDs this year

This is a tough one. I will limit to one per band. I bought all of these this year.

Lunasa- "Redwood"
Danu- "When all is Said and Done"
Dervish- "Playing With Fire"
Teada- "Teada" (I haven't had the second album long enough for it to be considered)
Flook- "Rubai" (I still haven't gotten Haven)

Re: Your favorite CDs this year

"What is a purist?"

From what I've been told, a purist is a person who is strictly traditional and doesn't rock music or dance music (rave) etc mixing with tunes. Dropkick Murphys and Coolfin would preety much be out of the question for a purist.
Theres nothing wrong with being a purist at all but I have this personal thing were purist are looked upon as being picky. Sort of like classing tunes as "this is the way we're doing it!!". But its not true, just something going on in my funny little mind.
