Lissofin Bodhrans

Lissofin Bodhrans

Hi,
Does anyone have any experience of these bodhrans?

Re: Lissofin Bodhrans

While I've never played one of his drums (have seen a couple, though), Darius is a very inventive fellow who does not make your run of the mill "thumper" of a drum. And while his construction is innovative (to say the least), his knowledge of skins and skin preparation techniques is better than most drum makers can claim. You'd not likely go wrong getting a drum from him, although I'd certainly contact him and talk about what you want, what your playing style is etc., so that he can design the drum with you in mind.

Cheers and G'luck!

Fantastic drums, although he's not in clare anymore. Currently living in France.

Re: Lissofin Bodhrans

I had an e-mail conversation with Frank Torpey, the excellent bodhran player with Nomos. He highly recommended Lissofin bodhrans, and played one to make his CD Rom Bodhran Tutorial for MadForTrad. I have also heard from people wanting to buy a Seamus O'Kane type drum with a deep shell, thin head and some type of mechanism to eliminate the overtones typical of a thin drum head in this type of bodhran. Lissofin was mentioned as an excellent alternative.

Re: Lissofin Bodhrans

Hey all,

Darius certainly knows his skins although I've not played any of his drums.

Rob forkner (second post in this thread) also makes kick-ass drums, I should know I have 5 of them. :)

Hey Rob - which side of the pond are you on chum?

Happy Christmas

Re: Lissofin Bodhrans

I agree with Rob, Paul, and by way of Ceol’s post, Mr. Torpey. I had occasion to meet Darius and tryout quite a few of his drums when he accompanied Eamon Murray and Damien McKee to New York a few years back. I also have to say that I whole heartedly agree with Paul’s assessment of Rob’s drums.

Heed Rob’s advice of communicating your wants and hopes with Darius. Express them all and don’t be surprised if he can fulfill if not all surely the Lion’s share of them. Well, he may have trouble sending a drum that plays itself.

Merry Christmas everyone. May Peace and Good Fortune find all in the New Year.

Peace,
Ed

Re: Lissofin Bodhrans

I like the Lissofin design of having the tuning system inside the rim. They also have kits for finishing off a bodhran shell and selecting the skin you like. As a weekend warrior carpenter of many years, I really like the idea of having kits. I hope their website goes to a shopping basket and checkout (near) universal format.
