There are some tunes, that when you first hear them ,make you stop what your doing and listen because their melodies are so beautiful that they're almost haunting. What are those tunes for you?

Re: tunes with haunting melodies

Aye monkeyos, you must of course be careful, when you say Tam Lin, to point out that it is indeed the Reel you are talking about & not the famous old Scots Ballad:

Hear the tune here:

Re: tunes with haunting melodies

I'm not sure about the "Mary Queen of Scots - spinning head!

I know it took three chops from the Axe-man to take it off, but why they should show it here, falling, is beyond me!

Unless it has something to do with the - "An ill death may she die." mentioned in the song.

Re: tunes with haunting melodies

I kinda prefer Arran Boat Song to Dark Island as haunting Scots tunes go. Recently I have playing Molly McAlpine aka Carolan's Dream - not quite the version on this ite which is bit strange I think. This is only because I heard it on the radio a few days ago and I've known the Michael O'Suilleabhain version for ages as tune to hum. So I picks up the whistle and gives it a lash and it really is a very beautiful melody.

Re: tunes with haunting melodies

Try playing Molly McAlpine in E.

Banshee (McMahon's)
Lilting Banshee
Drops of Brandy (well it is a spirit!)

Re: tunes with haunting melodies

There is just something about those tunes in G dorian ...

Paddy Canny's Caves of Kiltannon - http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display.php/698 - I like to play it with Canny's settings of Rakes of Clonmel and his setting of Cliffs of Moher.

Re: tunes with haunting melodies

My favorite air is Ned on the Hill--breaks my heart every time.
There is an Irish Christmas carol whose name translates something like "That night in Bethlehem" that is very compelling as well, I learned it this season on my accordion, with all the minor chords in the accompaniment--quite beautiful.
