I've been playing a few different cheap whistles over the last year - walton, generation and meg clarke - the meg clarke is my favourite, it has a beautiful sweet breathy sound and reaches the high notes so easily,it's a pleasure to play on your own however it's tone is slightly flat which is disappointing because you're out of tune when you play with others.
Can anyone recommend a whistle for me? (pref not too expensive) I've been looking at them on the internet but some personal recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I just want to go to a shop and try them all out, which leads me onto another question - where in England will you find a shop that does sell a range of whistles - if any??
Freeman tweaked whitles are popular--- you can find them on-line at Big Whistle.com ,also the Feadog pro is suppose to be good. The feadog you get by contacting their website and asking. The pro is a new product---10 dollars U.S.
The new Black Diamonds are very good I play one and a Sindt so if I am playing one and a Sindt as my two Whsitles that should tell you something. By the way go to Big Whistle and they do carry Black Diamonds.
I have said it before and will say it again. From my perspective, the plain old unmodified Clark tin whistle, with its wooden fipple is the best around. It is easily playable throughout both octaves, has a more authentic sound than all these fancy wood/plastic/brass/aluminum instruments, and is inexpensive. Why play some fancy modern ersatz whistle when you can play a REAL traditional tin whistle. And if you want something a little sturdier, Shaw makes a nice tin whistle as well.
Clarkes Sweetone is a great cheap whistle (under £5) and well worth trying. I don't know where you are in the UK but maybe there's a Hobgoblin or Eagle or whatever near you? See if you can try a Dixon (from about £20). If you want best quality on a budget see if you can get to try a Silkstone (£65 and wonderful!). These are all UK makes and Google will help you track them down. Happy hunting!

Re: can anyone recommend a good whistle?
There's usually a lot of different sorts in Hobgoblin in Manchester. (I was last there about a year back)
It's worth a visit if it's in your range, and a try out of all of them, cos you can see that price is not a measure of quality.

Re: can anyone recommend a good whistle?
There's a Sindt for sale right now on (US) Ebay.com. You might find a whistle as good as a Sindt, but you won't find any better.
