I've got a chance to go and see Cherish the Ladies. However, I'm in school and their playing about 2 hours away from me. So, I'd have to rush home, get dressed, drive like a maniac just to get to the concert on time, then get home around 1 or 2 in the morning, sleep maybe 4 hours, and get to school.
I suppose Im asking in a round about way is this. . .
Have any of you seen Cherish the Ladies in concert, and are they worth me putting myself in a sleep deprived state?
I have a few albums by them, but dont know that much about them personally.
I've done it. Many times . And never regretted it . Joanie Madden herself is reason enough to see Cherish the Ladies. The musicianship of all the "ladies" is undebatable. Lot to learn here, and fun doing it. You can bet money I'll be there next year when they come to WV or Hagerstown MD.
I've seen em twice, the last time back in September at the Kansas City Irish Fest. Joannie Madden is quite entertaining with her antics on stage but a real musician as well.
In September it was Cherish the Ladies, minus one lady, plus one gent. Their regular accordion player was away so they brought along a male PA player, first name Johnny, from New York who was excellent.
I just saw them perform Friday night in East Greenwich, RI--they were just starting their Christmas concert tour. They were all great--I was especially impressed with their new singer Heidi Talbott--what a voice she has! And Joanie Madden was great as always.
By all means, make the effort, go and enjoy!
I've seen them many times over the years and never really failed to enjoy them(well, one gig only they didn't quite hit the spot but that may have been me). They have had many line up changes over the years but it's always a great show.
Unfortunately, there's been quite a few "moans" from some Celtic Connections attenders about them always being brought back every year. However, they are very entertaining and have a huge following there now, so why not?
Awful, utterly twee band - great musicianship but their choice of songs has always been geared toward the USA's ex-pats and their tune arrangements just stink of saccharin.
Dogbreath, I can see where you're coming from and I'm inclined to agree about some of the songs and treatment of tunes. It does seem to be for an US market. However, I still find them very entertaining. There have been lots of changes over the years, of course, and the band has included many great musicians e.g. Liz Carroll, Eileen Ivers, Winnie Horan and so many more in their number. I actually bought the original album which was Mick Moloney's project way back in the eighties and was delighted when I first got to see them in Glasgow several years ago now.
Of course, what they do these days is fairly mainstream and safe but I can remember the excitement and buzz when they first emerged on the scene.
Further re choice of songs and tunes. CTL are not alone, in this respect. Unfortunately, bands like Altan, Solas and a few others appear to have "watered down" some of their output over the years. I'm not sure if this is due to pressure from larger record companies or on their own intitiave but it does seem to happen.
Anyway, I'm also looking forward to Altan's 21st birthday concert in Glasgow. It should be a hoot!
Sorry, back again. Dick, I've only seen London Lasses once at a festival a few years back. Great band but they now have Pete Quinn with them so they're not an all women band anymore.

Don’t miss the show Johnathan! You can get sleep anytime. How many times do you have the opportunity to see this fabulous ensemble?
Peace,

You can sleep when you die. <GG>
I heard them twice (missed the third possibility) at the Dublin, Ohio, festival last summer.
Don't miss 'em.

Hey, if anyone, on this side of the pond, feels excluded from this thread, don't worry, we could start talking about 'The London Lasses':

All brilliant musicians too.

Dee Havlin is an amazing flute player. Her playing on the Deante albums made my brain explode.
