Thornton Caldwell?

Thornton Caldwell?

Hi, just wondering if anybody knows anything about this maker or if anyone has any experiance with his instruments? (http://thesitefactory.co.uk/thorntoncaldwell/home.html)
They look amazing but has anyone actually played one?
He uses Wenge for the back and sides, can anyone tell me the advantages/disadvantages of a wood like this?

Re: Thornton Caldwell?

I think there has been some discussion of these on the Mandolin Cafe website, and maybe in the Usenet Acoustic Guitar Newsgroup.

They are amazing. I think I asked him, from his site, if the stripy stuff on the neck was on the surface, decor, or structural, and he told me that the "ribs" were carved to be an integral part of the structure and stiffened the neck.

I don't recall if anyone who had ever played or heard any of his instruments chimed in or not...

I'd have to be the genius player of the entire solar system to play one in public... but that's just me... <GG>
