Today is ...

Today is ...

Today is a very special day. St. Andrew's Day to be precise.

Greetings to all our members with Scottish ancestry! I've had some fantastic sessions in Scotland, a very beautiful country, and a hotbed of great musical tradition, Irish, Scottish and much more!

Have a great day lads and lassies!

Re: Today is ...

Thanks Brian, Yes of course it is. Not being celebrated the same way as St Patrick's Day (down here anyway), and being preoccupied with other things, I clean forgot....though, as we're not too long into it here, there's plenty of scope for celebrating that famous Galileean gent, brother of Simon Peter....eg Zinafest?

A Happy St. Andrew's Day to ye and yours, Brian! I'm born and raised in Noo Yawk but Dad's kin are all from Appin, Aberdeen, and Glasgow. Such a beautiful place...hope to return after I get a few more bills paid and tuitions resolved...

Think I'll wear my best 'Tarten Y Fronts' in honour of the day that's in it! - on the outside of my trousers - of course!

Re: Today is ...

Scotland - oh the stories I could tell.

I learned the art of alcohol abuse in scotland when I was sixteen.

Many of the nicest people I ever met were from Scotland; and the single most evil person I ever met was also from Scotland. So we mustn't generalise.

I've had some bad times in Scotland:
I've nearly died of hypothermia;
had my a*se bit by a big dog;
been beaten up;
rained on;
snowed on;
carried off the Skye ferry on a stretcher;
sheltered from a storm in a culvert under the A9 at the top of Drumochter;
slept in a car park in Glenrothes;
been penniless, homeless and jobless.

Not all of these were in the same day.

But I've never been friendless in Scotland - not even at Cardoness, Gatehouse of Fleet in Dumfriessshire - a thoroughly corrupt and wicked and shameful place full of hatred and despair. (God bless you Jimmy and Annie Ferguson).

Re: Today is ...

He was the first of the twelve apostles,perhaps Greek ,and also the patron saint of Russia.He never set foot in Scotland.Some of his relics were brought to Fife to the place now known as St. Andrews,the site of the golf course.He was crucified on a cross saltire (X) hence the Scottish flag.

Re: Today is ...

I think you'll find he was from near Galilee, and was a Jew. But the Greek name Andrew or Andreia was used by many Jews around then and meant something like Manhood. Like Fearghas (Fergus) in Scots and Irish Gaelic.
Interesting bit about the origin of the Saltire, though.

Re: Today is ...

Yep Showaddydadito, we know how to have a good time up here.

I'm playing a gig in Gatehouse of Fleet on Saturday night, can't wait.

Re: Today is ...

Yo Curlew

Gatehouse is OK.

But stay out of Cardoness.

Ask if Jimmy Ferguson is in your audience.

Tell him Dave and Molly send their warm regards.

Re: Today is ...

Hmm. I like that part of Scotland...well, A bit further North in the Rhinns of Kells, Carsphairn and around there. I used to spend a lot of weekends there as a teenager doing ecology field studies...and boozing in local pubs of course.

Re: Today is ...

So he's gonna be crucified yeah. And he says to the guys who are about to put him to a horrific long and painful death, "I am not worthy. Please please do me in on a diagonal cross."

Eedjit.

Re: Today is ...

Good man, Michael, sticking your neck out and speaking your mind, on the national saints day of the country you're a host in - I admire your bravery....and pray tell, how would you like to be crucified, St Michael?

Re: Today is ...Oddfellows' night

To celebrate St Andrew's Day, we are having a one-off session in the Oddfellows Arms, Beverley, East Yorkshire tonight from 8.30, Wednesday 30th. (the session is usually Tuesdays). Northumbrian, Scottish, Irish and token English tunes will be featured.
(Two-in-a-bar rule will still apply to bodhrans)

Re: Today is ...

I thought it was funny actually...and anyway I don't think I've slagged off your (mythical) national patron saint.

Re: Today is ...

My national patron saint isn't mythical.

Re: Today is ...

I'm probably forgetting the smiley button Danny - I wasn't knocking you down - just highlighting the irony.
