A strange hybrid

A strange hybrid

I've just come across a very strange collaboration called CeiliZemer: Shalom Ireland (2003) featuring Freilachmakers Andy Rubin and David Kidron (fiddle) and both members of the renowned Northern California Irish group Driving With Fergus (bouzouki/guitarist Lewis Santer and pipes/whistle player Vince Wolfe), with contributions from various guest musicians.

Re: A strange hybrid

This is absolutely mad music! I've never heard anything like it. Does anyone have a site to get the dots for this or something similar?

Re: A strange hybrid

You can get the dots and midi files for a lot of these tunes on J.C's ABC tune match Set the number to 2000 and type klezmer into the search box. There is also a German site called Virtual Klezmer it has many scores for Klezmer tunes.

Re: A strange hybrid

You know I was thinking of doing something like this. I thought I was the first. I will have to take a listen when I get a chance.

Re: A strange hybrid

House Band did a medely with a Romanian tune called Risipiti and an Irish tune .Mairtin O'Connor . The first tune is very similar to Hora din Caval .Its funny but the Irish tune sounds more exotic than the Romanian one.

Re: A strange hybrid

I know Andy Rubin from when he lived in Seattle (he's now in Sacramento). "Shalom Ireland" is actually the soundtrack from a wonderful film about the Jewish community in Ireland, which goes way back. So the hybrid really isn't all that strange.

Re: A strange hybrid

The whole thing sounds rather like the New Mills Klezmer sessions, which include a number of ITM players as well as the klez regulars, which gives it unique sound....

I rewrote 'Baym Rebn in Palestina' to fit the whistle, and renamed it 'Baym Rebn in Kilfenora'.

Talking of Jews in Ireland, it was the hundredth anniversary of the Limerick pogrom this year.
