Tune ID help!

Tune ID help!

Hi all,

I came across some free mp3's on Newcastle fluter Tom Oakes' website.

http://www.tomoakes.co.uk/Sounds.htm

Can anyone identify the last jig in the set from

Sutton:Oakes - Demos

Crawford's / Barnard Castle / Nicoll's (with Julian Sutton and Roope Aarnio)

Tom has it labeled as "Nicoll's" but I'm sure it's not the real name of this jig. He probably just heard the tune from Kathryn Nicoll's playing in Edinburgh.

I have heard this tune played around Scotland in the more Irish-y sessions.

Cheers

Re: Tune ID help!

Hmm, I know it well, played it often with Kathryn and others.
And I've never found the need to know its name

Re: Tune ID help!

But you obviously needed to know "The Bucks of Oranmor" 's name. ;-)

Re: Tune ID help!

No I never. Not knowing the name of a tune is not a point of principle any more than needing to know the name. If I know, I know it, so what.

Re: Tune ID help!

Och, ma heads fine Jim.

The word "cynic" is in Micheal's Details....not certain whether it's a self description or a random word, but judging from the comments...

I could just write out the dots for my student, but why bother if the ABC's are already here under it's real name, whatever it might be. Tune titles are not my usual concern, but this is "The Session" afterall.

Jim, I sucessfully downloaded the mp3 in question to my PC at work as well as home. Might the problem be your computer?

Re: Tune ID help!

The tune is called, "Paddy Reynolds' Dream" and it's posted here:

http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display.php/3090

In the comments section someone posted abcs for a "trio setting" that's closer to what I play.

Re: Tune ID help!

Well Jim, it has now been confirmed. The jig is Irish, not Scottish. Maybe the glitch is that your computer doesn't recognize Irish tunes. In that case I'd say yer fuct! Time for a new PC!

Re: Tune ID help!

Ha, I asked Kathryn what it's name was last night. She just shrugged her shoulders.

Re: Tune ID help!

It is true that not knowing the names is like a badge of authenticity for some folks. If you do know the names -- you're pegged as an anorak. I just got an idea... I'll be right back.
