ITM Twist

ITM Twist

Check out the Paperboys for an interesting twist on ITM. They rock in concert! They play in the Pacific NW in the USA as well as across the pond.

Check out some of their stuff: http://cdbaby.com/cd/paperboys4

Their web site is www.paperboys.com

Re: ITM Twist

Very entertaining for people that aren't already fans of ITM, but it's not the sort of thing that ITM fans are going to find much interest in. They're basically a accoustic pop band with fragments of Irish melodies here and there along with other folk styles. I wouldn't call it an "ITM twist" really since ITM is only a slight decoration rather than a main element in the music.

Re: ITM Twist

And I was SOOOO hoping for a new "Chubby Checkers plays Willie Clancy" album.

*sigh*

Re: ITM Twist

I am not familiar with the Paperboys myself, but don't make the sweeping assumption that ITM fans don't like occasional forays into rock and pop. There are lots of good bands out there that mix ITM influences into a wide range of music and do it quite well--I was listening to the new Great Big Sea album just the other day, for example.

Re: ITM Twist

A few years ago, they came to play a festival here in town. The band isn't quite my cup of tea, but their fiddle player knows her way around the tunes. She gets lost in all of the stuff going on with the band, but on her own is pretty darn good.

Re: ITM Twist

Hi Al, it's not a "sweeping assumption." Very few ITM aficionados I know are the slightest bit interested in this sort of thing. I'm not saying everyone won't like it, but based on everyone I've talked to about it I can pretty safely assume that the vast majority wouldn't find much interest. I like all kinds of music myself, but I'm not that interested with pop fused with Irish personally. There is however some pop and rock, jazz, etc. that I enjoy very much.

For example, I like Indian classical music, and I even like the Beatles and George Harrison's (Hari Georgison's) forays into the genre, but I'm not that keen on Indian pop. The same is true for Middle Eastern styles. I would much rather listen to the traditional forms of those genres. The same is true with ITM. I suppose if someone did a scientifically accurate assessment of ITM fans and their preferences regarding this sort of thing I might be proven wrong. But like I said, based on all of my conversations with people I know it seems to be the case.

Re: ITM Twist

They must be friends of scjandy, yeah? Afro-Celt sound system come to mind as a good blend of genres. I don't get the paperboy's deal, though.

Re: ITM Twist

I'm not too familiar with the Paperboys (heard a bit of their soundcheck once, downloaded an mp3 of their version of All Along the Watchtower--clever use of Musical Priest in that), but I'm pretty sure they're solidly in the post-Pogues mold. Ditto the Duhks, Flogging Molly, Clumsy Lovers, et al.

Good stuff to introduce (seduce?) rock fans into checking out the real thing. Maybe play some Coolfin for them next, and pretty soon they're into the hard stuff.

Afro-Celt are OK, I suppose, except when the boring compu-synth and electric guitar noodling take over. I'm not sure their stuff will age well.

Re: ITM Twist

Like Horslips did? And what izzup with all these stupid drop kick murphy Pogues ripoffs 10 years later? Is pop music so stilted that our generation can't come up with something a wee bit original?

Re: ITM Twist

Er... weren't the Pogues more like 20 years ago? Time flies.

Re: ITM Twist

Yeah the Pogues were more like 20 years ago. I used to be into this type of thing but I am into the real stuff now plus some other cultures' stuf like Breton and Galician but only the stuff that is easy to get in the States which is not much..
