A day of fiddling around!

A day of fiddling around!

I had an awesome day yesterday- I ditched work, spent the day on the Oregon coast in miserable weather at the Yachats Celtic festival. I attended a fiddle work shop with Patrick Ourceau- a bit over my head- but an awesome experience none-the-less. I did my best to follow along- learning by ear is still fairly new to me! I also attended a percussion workshop with "Vash" - very interesting and entertaining! At 5pm they had a troop of bagpipers playing out on the beach- pretty amazing.

On my way home (after a breif interlude at the outlet shops)- I made my way to Dallas, Oregon for an evening session. My second session! Extremely different than my first session at the Wolf and Hound in Vancouver. This session was more oldtime- but they played a few celtic tunes as well. On the first round I passed as my mind seemed to go blank- all of the sudden I couldn't remember any of my tunes (is that normal? )! On the second round, after bumbling through many of the tunes or simply listening- I suggested whiskey before breakfast- they asked how fast - I replyed "moderate" - They oblidged-however, their moderate was faster than I have ever played- I did my best, got in as many phrases as I could and had a great time- I will be back on as many friday nights as I can!

Sounds like a great day! We've all heard about your "nice" weather in the NW. Yes, it certainly is normal to have your memory go blank when it's time to play in public.

My middle school orchestra plays that same tune- but we call it "Pizza Before Breakfast" so I won't get any phone calls from the superintendant.

Re: A day of fiddling around!

I've heard it as Spirits in the Morning or Spirit of the Morning and other such things to keep people from getting upset.

That does sound like an excellent day.

People get upset over a mere title? What is wrong with them !

Re: A day of fiddling around!

Uhh, well some people are stupid. . . and get offended by titles of innocuous tunes - for example, have you ever heard of the tune Devil's Dream? Great fiddle tune, except my fiddle teacher had to rename it for some students. It commonly goes by names like Angel's Dream and all. Really sad.

Re: A day of fiddling around!

Yeah, I took part in a fiddle camp this summer- they referred to the song as punch before breakfast.

musicfan - you should try living here in the north. You can actually start a riot in a pub if you play a tune with the 'wrong name'! - & I'm talking about something as seemingly inoffensive as that old favourite, happily played the World over, but not here if you please - Soldier's Joy!

Re: A day of fiddling around!

What kind of pipers....and how many is a troop?

Re: A day of fiddling around!

They were very soggy highland pipers, at least by Saturday evening; it was raining horizontally at that point. (Note: a fiddle case and a 50 mph gust of wind is a dangernous combination.) A great weekend for indoors, and a great weekend of music. My brain will take days to recover...

The great question I came away with: why does Donogh Hennessy's guitar look as if it has been sat upon?
