I’m trying to put a jig set together. It starts with Tobin’s Favorite and Out with the Boys. I thought something in A major starting on a high A might be cool. Any suggestions?
Thanks. Both tunes are interesting. I think Tom Billy’s would work well and I’ll try it when I get home. I like that it starts on the high A but I would also like to get something a little more solidly Major to really contrast with the Em sound to the B part of Out with the boys. Any other suggestions?
My favorite A major jig is called Health to the Ladies, An Irishman's Heart to the Ladies, or Sweet Biddie Daly's, depending on who you talk to. It is solidly A major, a nice bright tune.
Maybe the Cuil Aodha jig--often played in G, but it works great in A on fiddle/mandolin. Starts on a high A, clearly A major, and most importantly, it's a great tune.
By the way, just checked the tune archives, and it shows the tune starting on an F#. I play it pretty much as written, but I always start it with an A instead of an F#, which satisfies your desire for a tune that starts on that note.
Handsome Young Maidens starts on the high A after a pickup. There's a fun A Major jig by Jennifer Wrigley called Miss Sarah McFadyen, but it starts on the A above middle C.
wormdiet,
In Health to the Ladies, like many A tunes, there are no Gs in the tune that would be sharp or natural to tip you off for sure, but from an accompanist's standpoint, I find that A major chord structure sounds much better than any alternatives. Some of these tunes can go a couple of different ways, harmonically, as their structure is somewhat ambiguous, something you obviously know from your suggestions about Cliffs.
I will try kicking off with an A major chord instead of an A minor chord in Cliffs next time I encounter it to see how it sounds, as I usually play it in A dor rather than A mix.
The "Mooncoin Jig" is in A mixolydian.
I've played "The Eavesdropper" in both A and G major, so I'm not really sure what the original key for this one is.

Check out "Myra's jig" -- a very "A Major" jig with a lot of swing.

Stan Chapman's/Willie's Trip to Toronto (same tune). Doesn't start on a high A but I like it nonetheless.

The Atholl Gathering (first two parts only as originally written), although it doesn't start on high "A" is a very bright tune in that key.

Re: ISO Jig in A Major
Not to be a dork, but aren;t all these tunes in A mixolydian? Does it matter?
Cliffs of Moher is in A dorian normally, but actually sound really good in A Mix too.
