What do you think - should people be allowed to change their handle/moniker/pseudonym at will?
Should all past names be automatically included in their bio - a section that they cannot tamper with!
Please discuss as I stand back and scurry for cover.
I once changed my name to Jack Gilder, and had a bit of fun saying outrageous things to people who thought I was him, whilst Jack had to sit there ranting and raving under a different name. He and Jeremy didn't see the funny side though, which made it even funnier for me
It's a stupid thing to do, and can only damage any attempt to maintain some kind of continuity and real communication on a forum. Posing as someone else is an easy thing to do but I personally don't see the funny side of it.
Well, as I have been the target of the latest prankster's so called brand of humour on this score, I feel I should throw in my 2P's worth to this debate.
I don't think we should panic over one little insignificant event. I'm sure this prankster, although they have appeared before & irritated us under a different guise, & were swiftly turfed off on that occasion, will quickly become bored of their little game.
I don't think there is any kneed for a knee-jerk reaction to this.
I noticed Jeremy dealt very swiftly with the two more recent impersonators of 'my good self', ( well, 'someone' has to say something good about me! ) & I have every confidence that he is keeping a close eye on 'she with the wiggle over her a's'.
Jeremy has done a magnificent job so far, guiding this craft through strange & alien waters in the past, & I say we leave him to get on with running this, whichever way he sees fit.
Engage! ........Warp factor five! ..........Onwards & Upwards. ................To a galaxy far, far away.............................
Does that mean it's made from alluminum panels like these: http://www.doil.net/
If it was, then I wonder would it be much louder? If so, must pass that idea on to the dude who was recently looking for more volume from his.
On the other hand, if it was used for ITM surely it'd be called a Mandoylein, woulkdn't it?
Other than a few moments of confusion from time to time, and a few moments of stark terror yesterday at the thought of multiple Ptarmigans inhabiting the site , I have no problem with changing user names. I don't think we should change the rules--the loss of freedom produced by the "cure" would produce more damage than the "problem." And who knows, someday I might choose to be more anonymous than my current nom de guerre!
Cammy you can become "Mandoilin" if you like.
Obviously no-one else really thinks that past monikers should stick in your Bio. I just thought that if enough agreed then maybe Jeremy might see if it was possible. It's just that when reading old postings it sometimes doesn't make sense when comments come under the altered moniker.
I would have thought most people start out as anonymousses and then as they feel more comefartable they reveall more of themselveses.
It's time I went to bed I thunk
I think it is an incredibly childish and immature thing to do. It shows no depth of character and displays only fickleness and shallowness. And paranoia and indecision (I think). Anyone caught persistently committing this offence should be boiled alive several times over. Then made to use their real name.
I admit that moniker changes can make rereading old threads a walk on the surreal side, but as someone who has gone from semi-anonymous (fiddlemouse) to using my real name I would suggest that not all moniker changes are bad. Funny, though, Donough, that you suggested people leave past names in their bios; I did just that on my own initiative so people wouldn't be unduly confused.
BTW, Danny, I really needed that laugh. Thank you!
Sara, That "g" on your name just might stand for gem.
I have stayed out of this discussion because I only wanted to hear what other people felt.
BTW a very nice run-down on Aspieworld there in your bio.
Donough, it's actually the first letter of my last name (the way Trevor use to go by Trevor J)...but that's sweet of you! I've gotten a lot of positive feedback about the aspie piece, and found my session bio listed on websites discussing Asperger's! That was a trip.
Ptarmigan, good heavens, don't tell me you know this obscure corner of the world? The leaves have been gorgeous this year, especially the aspens going off like torches of red and gold among the evergreens, but we had out first freeze and snow a few days back and almost all of the leaves are now brown mush on the ground. Ah, but it was fine stuff while it lasted!
Dave, I *have* actually been pretty scarce for several months due to job changes and having less time to muck around online. But I'm still about, more or less, even if quieter these days. One big hug right back atcha...

. Yes, by all means, "You may scurry when ready, Gridley."
> handle/moniker/pseudonym at will?
Yes, I had some complaints about abusing somebody's copyright.
> Should all past names be automatically included in their bio -> a section that they cannot tamper with!
Yes, but I'm afraid that in one liar's case it wouldn't help.

Re: Chameleon
If people can just change them whenever they want, then we're as well not having usernames.

Real communication involves having a laugh and doing stupid things once in a while. That's why I don't spend much time here anymore...

OK you can 'hinge' my brain back up now.

Hey Sara g, I bet Rogue Valley of Southern Oregon is just stunning at this time of year - or have all the leaves fallen by now?

Re: Chameleon
Hi Sara - I was just thinking the other day that you'd not been around lately, and wondered how you were.
But there you are - under a new name.
Putting the name change in your bio is a step in the right direction - but I never thought to look at Sara G's bio.
Ah well - nice to hear from you again.
Big Hug
Dave
