Just wanted to share this one. I while back I wrote about getting 'Hate Mail', but this time someone's been doing it publicly on a discussion forum - a forum on which I had never posted. I was there looking for some tin whistle info, and I came across this. A forum member asked a question about fiddle sites, and someone suggested my site, http:/www.worldfiddlemusic.co.uk .
The next reply came from someone calling themselves 'toasty', and this is it :
"Jim Dorans BTW is a poser, a 'wannabe famous' dole recipient in the Uk and has as much skill on fuddle as G W Bush has with the English language. Do yourself a favor and find a 'Suzuki' teacher before somebody injures themselves trying to ape the UK welfare 'bowshuffle' "
I replied in a 'measured' fashion, more just to let people know that I read the offensive post. The nasty post wasn't even criticism in any way - it was pure slander.
Jim, don't bother getting ulcers for this kind of timewaster. I believe it's just a kind of person who found a wrong side of enjoying anonymity on the Web. As you said, there is no criticism in that, there's pure slander.
On my part, I want to assure you that your online school of trad fiddling has found followers in this remote part of Europe, and everyone here - me in the first place - find Mighty Craic Online one of the best ideas since the development of simple-system flutes.
By the way, you should pay me some sort of commission for preaching information about your website in Poland. I accept pints as currency.
Jim, it's a strange thing that people think that when you do/achieve something you are somehow saying that you must be thinking how great you are. The real problem is with these people who are not remotely capable of achieving anything like the site you have created, and find their only satisfaction in being destructively critical.
In short, try and forget about this guy. He'd better not show up here or I'll set my dogs on him!
Cheers
Jim,
I don't think I've read a single post by yer man 'Toasty' when he wasn't giving it the big 'I am'.
Various people on C&Fipple have got upset by his slanderous comments, all of which seem to be baseless. I don't know why they don't bar him from the message board there.
Giving our Jim a bit more support. Not that you really need it, as I'm sure you don't really care what that strange person said. Yes, your reply was measured etc., Jim, so fair play to you.
Just to add I have played in session with Jim and he is a fine player. I didn't happen to notice him posing.
Jim, I read the comments by this person. That's horrible, and I'm glad you seem to have a sense of proportion about it all!
I'd have thought they should be removed (from the site, but maybe in some other way too!) before they cause legal problems - the site owner would be liable for libel, which is effectively what this person has committed.
It's just jealousy. As G.B. Shaw said, these people are like eunuchs in a harem, they know how it's done, they see it done every day but they can't do it themselves.
Jim – The discussion you quote above on the C&F slandering Pete Cooper was the second time that this “toasty” guy had a go at Pete. He has a real hang-up about English fiddle tutors teaching Irish tunes. The first time I came across him was here.
I am not a fiddle player but a backer & whistle player but have the pleasure of knowing many fiddler players from Notts, Oxford, Sheffield & IoW. I know that they are very grateful that sites like yours exist. I emailed Pete Cooper after “toasty’s” second slanderous comments. He replied to me saying “that he must be doing something right” and chose to ignore.
It’s makes me laugh that this guy seems to give advice to fiddlers and admits in one of his post that he can’t play fiddle because of a dodgey elbow.
I totally agree with Donough’s post. I also think that he thrown off the C&F message board.
Thanks for Mighty Craic Online.
Mikk
NB I think the thread "Fiddle Help: Bought a Beginner's one off of Ebay won't play" on C&F has just been locked!!!!!!! Pehaps the jury is out on “toasty”
Hey Jim,
Just keep on smiling; encouraging and giving so many people the chance to play and express themselves is what is right!
I visited your links and was horrified, as are others, that toasty hides behind the veil of anonimity. There is no courage in being faceless, nameless, whether positive or negative.
I've had some stuff like this - in various walks of life, not specifically in the world of music.
Dunno if it helps or not, but sometimes a useful way of approaching such slanders is to ask oneself "Is it true?" - then if it's not true it is easier to do the old "ignore it and get on with life" thing.
Here's a smiley - intended as a big encouraging smile, not to signify irony.
Hi Jim,
try to forget this guy. There are always people who love to be negative. What has he done himself to help people with the music???? Thank you for your site. It is helpful for many people who want to learn and don't have anybody to ask...
Bad stuff. I echo the comment about him showing up here. I kind of hope it happens. After a recent thread regarding session etiquette, I have every confidence that we can take care of this stuff.
Sad to say, any kind of prominence does bring out the crazies. I had a taste of this when I had my 15 minutes of fame after writing two books on holistic health. It is truly unbelievable what a readership will project onto you. When I went on radio talk shows or was interviewed by journalists, at least half my time was spent on, "I did not say that." "That wasn't the intention at all." "I am absolutely not saying that."
Yet another <sarcasm> fun </sarcasm> aspect of being in the public eye is you don't know what others are saying about you and calling as fact. In my case, it was the publisher -- on the cover of my second book. A lot of times, also, this nasty stuff can be stoked up by people in your field who envy your success. Again, this is personal experience talking.
My own M.O. is to rebut it whenever possible and ignore the rest of it. Still, I am evil enough to really hope he shows up here so we can rip him apart.
So try to relax about and enjoy the good parts of your accomplishments and success.
Apologies in advance for what I'm about to say, but obviously this toasty lad doesn't know what side his bread is buttered on (and for which he deserves a good grilling...)
Hey Donough, relax, I've had experience with this tosty fella in the C&F smoking room and his comments should be taken about as serious as my attempt to lighten the subject. This guy seems to enjoy making baseless and obnoxious statements. He's probably loving this thread.
Hey Jim, just checked your Guestbook & - Wow! - you 'must' be delighted by all those 'glowing' tributes.
It's obvious your website is very worthwhile & a great success.
I didn't actually get a chance to read your friendly, neighbourhood 'toasty's' comments, but I didn't need to, cause all the positive comments in your guest book said all I needed to know, to convince me to sign up.
What a strange twisted person this toasty must be.
Obviously in need of deep psychotherapy, perhaps Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, or maybe even Behaviour Modification Therapy. Alternately, a large dose of Haloperidol.
I know you not, Jim, but I do know Pete Cooper - I managed to doze through it the last time it was on television, but he is in the movie "The Belly of an Architect", if you want to see/hear him. He is both a fine and proficient musician, and a highly regarded teacher of the fiddle here in London. It's good to know he also has broad shoulders.
If you get the opportunity try to hear/see Rattle the Stovepipe, his trio with Dave Arthur and Chris Moreton - truly excellent.
