What's your Poison?

What's your Poison?

I wonder, has a census ever been carried out here regarding which beverage ITM enthusiasts find most stimulating & which encourage & inspire their best music?

To start the ball rolling, as I always have to drive to sessions or gigs, I almost always drink either flavoured Water or Tea.

Sorry, probably not the ideal beverage to get us started here, but I do, on occasion, have an odd Hot Whisky or Hot Port if it's a cold night out.

However, what I'm getting at here is, could there actually be a correlation between one particular alcoholic beverage & the best exponants of ITM?

Re: What's your Poison?

Diet Coke for me (non-trad, for sure) since one Harp after a full day of teaching and I'd surely see the blue lights flashing behind me...

Re: What's your Poison?

What? You mean Aliens...................

Can't handle that Diet stuff myself.
I think it's that powdery taste from the Sacharin that puts me off!

Must admit I like Harps too, but I couldn't eat a whole one! Haw Haw..........

Re: What's your Poison?

I drink diet-sodas too, though I prefer water, tea, or lemonade. Since I'm still underage I cannot contribute to the alcoholic beverage of inspiration search. Although, I thought that only rock&roll or country touted alcohol and/or drugs as the inspiration or the best exponents of the musc. . . ;-)

Re: What's your Poison?

Boddington's, at one place anyway. (You can't get Guinness bitter, in this country, unfortunately.) But only one pint, for a three-hour session. Otherwise, I can't remember how to start tunes, and my fingers move too slowly.

For the record, I used to drink Guinness stout, when I played in Celtic rock band. "Best exponents of ITM"? I think not.

Re: What's your Poison?

Local micro-brew porter or stout, Moose Drool (a Montana dark ale), any decent whiskey, Knob Creek or Baker's bourbon, the occasional single malt, and on hot summer days, a gin and tonic with Bombay Sapphire gin. I'll go with a merlot or cab sav now and then, but wine tends to put me to sleep.

Re: What's your Poison?

Will, if you get a chance, try Mirror Pond Pale Ale (from Oregon).

I'll give Moose Drool a try, if I see it around. Sounds delightful....

Re: What's your Poison?

Oh, and the new pub in town has Pig's Ass Porter on tap. Two of those (20 oz.) get me through an evening.

One drink makes me a better player than I am. The next drink reverses the effect. By the fourth I'm effin' brilliant. :-D

Re: What's your Poison?

Unsweetened, cold - but not iced - Bigelow oolong tea is the most refreshing drink for me. But when I'm singing, I find that a beer or stout helps the throat stay happy. Doesn't take much. One or two beers will get me through a long evening.

Too much alcohol takes the edge off my playing, and the edge is about all there is to my playing. Not much substance.

Re: What's your Poison?

Yeah, I've liked Mirror Pond. Also the Deschutes Brewery Obsidian Stout, and especially their Black Butte Porter. Also Polygamy Porter ("Take home a six pack for the wives") from a brewery in Salt Lake City, Utah. The brewery in Seattle's Pike Market has a good porter (with a clever name that now escapes me) that I really liked last we were over that way.

Re: What's your Poison?

Strawberry sorbet, if not Beamish Red.

Re: What's your Poison?

Hey Will, is that the '89 Old Nitro from Pike Brewery? Can't be Kilt Lifter, that's one of their ales. My brother says if you like porters try Cold Cock Winter Porter. It's quite a decent one; light won't pass through it (IMO an important requirement for something made at a brewery) and it tastes pretty good too.

I usually do a bottle or two of Hornsby's cider, since you can't get either Strongbow or Blackthorn here too readily. But I do stop at two, or if it's a long session (as in four to five hours), three; beyond that and my fingers stop obeying the commands from my brain. Not pretty to start a simple piece and have to stop playing to disentangle your fingers from one another.

When it comes to the non-alcoholic, I prefer a nice mug of Darjeeling with a titch of sugar and a shot of soy or rice milk... mmm...

Re: What's your Poison?

Oh, my yes, When I'm up there I like Moose Drool, Black Butte, and Port Townsend Dark. Down (& Out) here I'm perfectly content w/ a Guinness or Newcastle. Whisky/ey a a different hobby: don't get me started.

If I'm playing in a Coffee Shop or bookstore, Premium Columbian or Brazil; black, unsweetened.. seems to help me concentrate.

Re: What's your Poison?

Guinness, single malts, some 'wegian lagers, Aquavit, coffee, water, the Porter House's Oyster Stout (mmmmm).

Moose Drool is by far the best beer name I have ever hear (coming from a country heavily infested with moose...:)

Re: What's your Poison?

I can't believe it, so far we've enjoyed: Boddington's, Moose Drool, Knob Creek, Baker's Bourbon, Bulmers, Bombay Sapphire Gin, Mirror Pond Pale Ale, Pig's Ass Porter, Bigelow Oolong Tea, Deschutes Brewery Obsidian Stout, Black Butte Porter, Polygamy Porter, Strawberry Sorbet, Beamish Red, '89 Old Nitro, Cold Cock Winter Porter, Hornsby's Cider, Darjeeling, Black Butte, Port Townsend Dark, Guinness, Newcastle, Robinson's Mild & I hardly recognise any of those names. Wonder how many of them are genuine drinks & how many are wind ups?

Oh Owell, I assume 'we' are still talking 'beverage' when 'we' mention - Premium Columbian & Brazilian Black or are they 'something else Man'? ;-)

Earl Grey with honey and lemon & a big chocolate bar on the side sounds 'very civilised' altogether & perhaps even Victorian - dmarie. :-D

GORDON BENNETT guys!
Such variety I did not expect.
Excellent - keep them a-comin'.

Sad though, cause I had to give up Beer over twenty years ago & you've just reminded me of what I am missing. :-(

What I ask for in my regular session is a "Cup of Tea with a Surprise!" - Tea with a measure of Black Bush, just to make it interesting. Couple of those a night keep me going rightly!

Re: What's your Poison?

Jeyes Fluid (aka 51 Pastis) when I'm in a bar. Sometimes Guinness or Beamish. At home old Sauternes, old Medoc, old Madeira, young Burgundy; old Barolo, old Armagnac or Cognac, old Vintage Port etc. All the money I make from the music goes to buy old wines to drink with friends who come to play music, sing songs and to enjoy the craic........

Re: What's your Poison?

Sorry dafydd & snorre, just crossed over your entries.

What about all those weird & wonderfully named bottles of Beer from the midlands & north of England?

Does nobody drink those any more.

You know the kinda thing, 'Theakston's Old Peculiar' etc Or do they do nothing to inspire the ITM in you?

# Posted on October 11th 2005 by Ptarmigan

Re: What's your Poison?

Depend which country - depends which bar.

If in Ireland, Guinness or another stout - whichever's available.

If in Scotland, England or Wales, any nice cask-conditioned beer that's going. Failing that, Guinness, if it's drinkable, & failing that orange juice or tap water.

If at home, a nice bottle-conditioned beer (not too gassy!), like Coniston ale, or even some of the American micro-brewery bottled beers available here, e.g. Sierra Nevada - lovely stuff. Failing that, whatever alcohol's available :-)

I don't tend to drink any whisky when playing - I like to relax when savouring nice peaty Islay malts - great with some oatcakes and slabs of a really good Scottish cheddar (one with a strong "bite" to it). YUM YUM!!!

Re: What's your Poison?

If I'm at home, Guiness. If I'm in the pub, Guiness. If I'm somewhere else, it'll probably Guiness.

My sense of timing goes off the rails if I have too much but fortunately the audience members' sense of appreciation is indirectly proportional to the amount they've had to drink as well, so they don't know.

You need to talk crap with your mates in between songs and you need to drink Guinness to do that properley.

Re: What's your Poison?

You'll not have heard of Robinsons. It doesn't travel well. We're about 15 miles from the brewery - but it doesn't go much further. They have a number of pubs down on the Lleyn, and it never gets that far, you have the bitter there.

Boddingtons used to be nice, but someone poisoned the waterhole about 25 years back, and it's never been any good since then, despite all the adverts. Good old Gladys Allthorp.

"Jemmy Hirst At The Rose And Crown" at Rawcliffe (session alternate Wednesdays) has one of the longer pub names in Britain, but has notched up 560 odd different beers over the last 3 years.

Re: What's your Poison?

At The Catherine Wheel - Brakspear's Ordinary
At The Four Points - Loddon Vale Hoppit or West Berks Brewery's Good Old Boy
At the Exeter Hall or Herschell - Guinness

And yes, Showadd, I'd second your championing of Robinson's - nectar! But too easy to drink!

Re: What's your Poison?

Two of the brewpubs that host monthly sessions also provide free drinks. One of them has pretty good beer, the other one's brew is pretty bad. Coincidentally, the accoustics in that 2nd pub are atrociously, horrendously bad.

I like sierra nevada when I can get it.

smithwicks, first choice always, can't go wrong, makes any night seem good ;)

otherwise im content with a visit to the Captain or Mr.Daniels

# Posted on October 11th 2005 by bmcclat

Re: What's your Poison?

Hey armaghfan, 17 year olds are not allowed to drink Smithwicks or Captain Morgan or Jack Daniels...

You should take a lesson from Greg the Piano Tuner and drink some diet soda ;-)

For myself, it's a steady diet of Guinness until the end of the night, and then it might be a snifter of Grand Marnier (preferrably the 100, not the 150, although the regular stuff usually suffices)

Re: What's your Poison?

Nothing wrong with Theakstons' Old Peculiar....if you don't have to drive home.
Used to be ginger beer shandy - that's beer and ginger beer, not lemonade and ginger beer....
If I'm gigging/driving anything soft. If it's a local session I have a pint of anything real. Nowadays I can't seem to finish two.

Re: What's your Poison?

When I was a dipso Boddington's was great, but Whitbread got a hold of it. Mind you, Mickray said one pint for a three hour session, with us it was three pints per tune.

Robinsons was a great pint, brewed in Stockport, and I remember ordering a pint of Old Peculiar once, the landlord said we only sell it in half pints, so I said well give me six half pints then. And he did.

Bank's, Holt's, Courage Directors, is it any wonder I was a dipso?

But the prince of pints is probably, in my wide experience, Marston's Pedigree. About a dozen or so of them and the session was great.

Having seen the error of my ways, I took to herbal substances, cheaper and healthier. Mind you the water and blackcurrant (non-vintage) has ruined my teeth.

Re: What's your Poison?

Diet Coke is fine, but at an all-night session, if you wish to stay awake, you can't beat the high-caffeine beverage known as Bawls.

# Posted on October 12th 2005 by Zazzaliss

Re: What's your Poison?

...how about an intraveinous Diet Coke?

# Posted on October 12th 2005 by Greg the Piano Tuner

Re: What's your Poison?

Greg, don't you have one of those hands-free drinking hats everyone wears to football games? That'd work at a session...

# Posted on October 12th 2005 by dmarie

Re: What's your Poison?

What a great idea dmarie. Just think, if we each wore one of those hats to our sessions, we wouldn't even need to stop to drink - just imagine how long each of our sets could last! We could then go for a record in the 'Guinness Book of Records' for the longest set played!

If we had these hats connected to the Bar at the start of the night, we could even ask the bar staff to just top up our hats at regular intervals, then the only reason we would need to stop would be to take a p*ss!

Of course, to save us having to go..........no, perhaps I've taken this idea far enough?

# Posted on October 12th 2005 by Ptarmigan

Re: What's your Poison?

Alex, it doesn't work for everyone.
I am immune to caffeine - so no amount of high caffeine drinks keep me awake - apart from the need to pee because of the liquid intake.

My daughter, on the other hand, is highly susceptible to caffeine. If you just want a good laugh, you make her a cup of coffee.

Re: What's your Poison?

At home all sorts of micro-brews and single malts.

In sessions, a nice dark tea and a little bit of John Powers.
In general, a nice whiskey.

I was a single-malt student (read: snob) til we went to Ireland and out in the country, they only stocked Powers and Paddy. I learned to love them, now the Golden Ace in Indianapolis serves Powers and the wife's gotten the local liquid store to carry it as well!
