Moving to North Lancashire.

Moving to North Lancashire.

I'll be moving to the Lancaster area with the family at Christmas. Does anyone here play in that area & have any tips for finding a tune?

The Gregson Centre session sounds promising & apparently there is also a tune at the University.

Cheers.

Simon.

Re: Moving to North Lancashire.

I thought it was only Southern English people who believed in all that!

And that myth is a bit more like Yorkshire!
Good luck, Simon. Must get to meet you before you go!

Re: Moving to North Lancashire.

There's a pretty good music scene up there. The Gregson is a very good place to start. Be prepared for maniac melodeon players (good though).

Re: Moving to North Lancashire.

Well Danny, I think it was one of those times though it may have been the other, You might have been playing the capon in which case I would have felt I couldn't sit in.

Re: Moving to North Lancashire.

Some years ago, my wife and I used to bring Spanish students to Lancaster every summer to learn English.
There was a very lively session scene in Lancaster and the best sessions were hosted by Jim Maguire, brother of the famous Sean, both of whom are sadly no longer with us.
Musicians used to come in from Preston and the surrounding areas including Cumbria.
There was also a large contingent of musicians and followers of the music from Northern Ireland, particularly Belfast. This probably had something to do with the ferry to Belfast which used to leave from Heysham, just down the road.
I don't know what the session situation is like now , but I feel sure that Jim's heritage lives on in Lancaster where there are plenty of ideal pubs for sessions.
Mind you, I don't know if the 2-in-a-bar rule is applied there, but if you ask around I'm sure you'll find some music.
Good luck, Simon.

Re: Moving to North Lancashire.

Thanks Mike, that's really interesting. I had no idea about the Maguire connection.
I've been hearing really good things about the Gregson Centre session. Sounds strict in a good way too.
I'm still worried that Pingu might show up with his capon though, it only takes 1 to spoil the mood!

Re: Moving to North Lancashire.

I played a lot in Lancaster and certainly musicians came from everywhere for a session.
I played in a band with Jim Mcguire (m I think that's how he spelt it) with Celia (then Joyce, now Briar) and Gordon Johnston.
David Lyth who wrote the books on Traditional Fiddle Bowing was there, Wendy Stewart superb harpist, oh there were lots, and a very vibrant session scene it was. I think there was a session in The Crown?

Anyway, hope you have lots of fun, and your new home is a happy one!

Simon, Tuesday nights in the Gregson - after 9 pm.
Who are you and how do we know when you've arrived?

Re: Moving to North Lancashire.

Hello Forbidden flute. Discreet backer & average mandolin player from Stockport moving back to the North-West after nearly 2 decades away. We're moving up at Christmas & I'll come to the session for a beer & ask if I can sit in unless it will offend other backers. If it does I'll drink my beer & hopefully get to know everybody a bit & hope I haven't picked up a London accent in my time away, don't think so!

Re: Moving to North Lancashire.

See you there. It's easy to think it's a welcoming session but on the other hand, things never look quite so easy when you're approaching from outside. And there is a quiet freeze when someone brings out the spoons or a clarinet ... Bring the backing and the mandolin and you'll have something to offer. Good luck with the move.
