Fancy being part of the world's biggest ever guitar ensemble?
Next weekend there is a festival of acoustic guitar music in Osnabrueck/ north west Germany called Open Strings. Part of it is an attempt to bring more than 1323 guitarists together to play one tune. See http://www.open-strings.de/website%202005/english/worldrecordattempt.htm
If this is your idea of hell I don't blame you. But apart from this they've got a high class international line-up for the concerts.
The aim is to beat a world record. Whether that's a worthwhile thing to do is up to the individual. The choice of tune though is understandable, it's easy to arrange into the different playing levels from beginner to more advanced. And it has absolutely no bearing on the tragedy in NO.
I remember talking to the organiser Peter about this a while ago and the song was chosen months ago.Last year they tried Freight Train(Libba Cotton) but it was felt that it was perhaps too difficult for some of the players.
They had to choose a really well known song and HOTRS certainly is that.
Funny you should mention that JimR, I was at the very meeting with Peter Finger - in a pub in Germany, when the decision was made for HOTRS. I had been taking part in a guitar workshop with him.
I think the record you're going for beating was set in Portland a few years ago, playing "This Land is Your Land". We played it for an hour - after a while, a sort of trance takes over, it's sort of fun.

Yes, not a very appropriate choice of tune, given the recent terrible events in New Orleans.
