What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

I think (in my opinion) for flute is Stoney Steps by Matt Molloy, it is a complete classic that has the perfect blend of everything!

What do you think?

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

Heathery Breeze (Matt Molloy) and The Tap Room Trio (Harry Bradley)

Am I allowed two.....actually I'm answering teh wrong question.

I'm answering "What flute records do you like"

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

I think I need to agree withe Kess, Stoney Steps is fantastic. Although another favourite, although very predictable is Mike McGoldrick's Morning Rory and Cathal McConnell's solo album

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

Right now, Flute Players of Roscommon.

I wish there were some more recordings of 2-3 or even 4 flutes played together, which is how I think the flute is best represented. The only tracks I can think of are 2 tracks at the end of The Boys of the Lough Good Friends...Good Music, a set of jigs then a set of those 3 Vincent Broderick reels.

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

I prefer heathery breeze to stony steps. I find stony steps a little tooty and the tunes aren't nearly as good. (And then there's arty ... but that's another thread entirely)

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

My favourite flute recording is "Bad Turns And Horseshoe Bends", by Harry Bradley.
Closely followed by the "Music For Peace" CD#3 from the "Frankie Gavin 2003-2004" set, by Frankie with Gary Hastings. Some great duet playing on that.

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

Pingu - Flook! have two flutes in their line up. I've been to 3-4 of their concerts and enjoyed them immensely - despite my preference for fiddles!

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

Oh yeah Flook! - but they play kinda counterpoint melodies, lovely stuff, though. I mean, erm... whassit called? plainsong? as in a normal session.
Kenny, Frankie wouldn't be one of my fave flute players, gifted though he is, sorry. Re this thread:

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

Two flutes weaving the tune round one another really is thrilling. My obsession with irish flute-playing was sparked by the first time I heard the break from Dr Gilbert's into Devils of Dublin on Lunasa's Otherworld, where Kevin Crawford is joined by Mike McGoldrick, mostly in unison, but every now and then one of them throws in a harmony note or a rhythmic variation. I swear to Glod, the first time I heard that my brain exploded. Still haven't managed to stick all the bits back together.

I've always been keen to hear what John Skelton and Kieran O'Hare get up to on their "Double Barrelled" album - great name!

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

It's hard to say which is best but my favorite has to be Wooden Flute Obsession Vols 1 & 2. It has so many great players and any profit made is for a great cause. http://www.worldtrad.org/

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

If it's a solo flute recording, either of Harry Bradley's. If it's a flute & fiddle duet recording, Maeve Donnelly & Peadar O'Loughlin's "The Thing Itself."

I ordered Mike Rafferty's CD several days ago, and that should be a very nice recording. Wish to listen to G. Hastings and F. Gavin's duet playing.

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

Thanks guys ..

but what do you mean the tunes arn't is good as Heathery Breeze HB only have about 6 good tunes on it (when you think about it) it gets a little boring (forgive me Matt!) while Stoney Steps is a timeless classic which could be listened to umptine times!

PS Hi, michael gill do you like Arty or not, I think his playing on the album is a landmark in guitar accompanyment in ITM.

Like to hear the recording spoken of by ptarmigan.

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

Hey Kess, the one Catherine recorded with John McEvoy is also very good:
http://www.thesession.org/recordings/display.php/1105

Catherine McEvoy is a beautiful Flute player & a lovely lady into the bargain, so if you ever get a chance to hear her play - go for it!

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

Hey, before I go, pray tell, has someone above lost their marbles, altogether?
Who in their right mind is criticising Frankie Gavin'S musicianship?????????? Are you MAD altogether. Frankie is 'The Most Man' in my book, & I won't hear a word against him or his music!!

Go wash thy mouth out with soap & water Pingu!

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

I might get flogged for saying this, but in my opinion Kevin Crawford's "In Good Company" is a brilliant album. The playing is very polished, but more importantly, the arrangements are interesting and organic, but not the over the top "look at me" type.

I love Heathery Breeze too, but it isn;t quite the album that Kevin's is.

Also, Paddy Carty is an absolute god. In terms of pure playing that shines through despite the most annoying possible backing, (That monotonous banjo), PC wins every time :)

I don't actually have that many flute albums. . . it's hard to find some of the non-rock-star albums around here.

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

I was interested in the Arty McGlynn questions as well – should we start a separate thread ?

# Posted on September 15th 2005 by BegF

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

Aye, can I choose another? Go on pleeeeze? Thanks! Yeah, I agree with Worm! The Paddy Carty Album is a classic, & no mistake, although I must say I do like Mick's Banjo work on that, too. I was lucky enough to hear Paddy play live, under a flight of stairs, at a small Fleadh in a West Clare Hotel, many moons ago - a pure joy & delight!

Number four would be that Kevin Crawford CD.

Hey Worm, I take back everything I ever said about you - seems you have good taste after all!! :-)

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

Ptarm - I mean what I say. Frankie is a phenomenal fiddle player, and extremely accomplished flute and whistle player. But his treatment of certain tunes on the flute does nothing for me. Check out his treatment of those 2 reels I mentioned on the thread I linked to above, Col. Rogers /The Happy Days of Youth then compare that to Seamus Tansey's or Mick Mulvey's version, and you might see what I mean.

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

Watch Catherine and John playing together: http://www.custysmusic.com/mall/CustysTraditionalMusicShop/catherine_and_john_mcevoy.htm Their duet album is also great.

I ordered Mike Rafferty's CD several days ago, and that should be nice too. I also love June McCormack's soulful playing backed by Michael Rooney.

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

We’re maybe just going to have to disagree on this , pingu. But bear this mind, please – the question was not about any particular player, it was categorically about a recording. Have you heard the Gavin / Hastings recording I’m talking about? If you have, then fair enough, we have a different opinion. If not, then I don’t see how you can disagree with my choice – of recording, not player.

Excellent Slainte, I'm due you a PINT! Lovely stuff indeed. The Pure Drop indeed! Gives you a real flavour of herself & her music - Brilliant. That's just made my day now.

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

OK, Kenny, I haven't heard it. Point taken. And also point taken about this thread being about recordings, not players. I'll look out for it. But I based my previously stated view of Frankie's flute style *on what I'd previously heard*...hardly what you'd call a prejudice ...or is it?

I personally love F. Gavin's interpretation of the McKenna set though it's fast and flashy as you say, Danny. I must check Tansey's playing of it, but I've no money....

Hey wormdiet, that's our Mick O'Connor your talking about backing Paddy Carty!

...although it has to be said, it doesn't show Mick at his best...far from it, actually!

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

Och Pingu, you woossy, I thought we were going to see some real action there!!
On the other subject however, - Mick O'Connor - EXACTLY right -finest, most tasteful Banjo player around - no exceptions!!
Oh, & the third point, well, if the cap fit's, I'll wear it - with pride!

Naw Slainte, but I'll be happy to get you Black Bush - i.e. Real Whiskey!

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

Stoney Steps is a big fav in our house, along with Paddy Carty.

My personal favorite for many years was Conal O'Grada's Top of Coom, and it still makes it into the rotation now and again.
Now that we have so many flute CDs roaming around, it is difficult to pick any one favorite. I am racking my brain because I know there is at least one I am forgetting.

P. S. Kenny - CDs/Tapes arrived today - lookin' good ma man!Oh yes & I found that lost CD so a copy will be winging it's way o'er the Irish Sea before the weekend!!

Sorry to interupt Kess - you may carry on! :-)

Oh yeah, Larry Nugent's Two for Two is inspired; and you can deny the beauty of Cathal McConnell's Long Expectant Comes at Last...

whoops...that's can't deny the beauty...

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

John Skelton and Keiran O'Hare's Double Barreled was my absolute favorite for a while. It's still right up there, but I have so many good flute CDs now it's hard to choose a best. I love Kevin Crawford's In Good Company, and Conal O'Grada's Top of the Coom, and Wooden Flute Obsession 1 and 2. And others. So many others!

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

Surprised no one mentioned the Matt Molloy CD, his first (?)called Matt Molloy and recorded in Eb. Donal Lunny accompanying. Fantastic playing

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

I haven't listened to enough flute CDs to determine a "best," but I would recommend Colm O'Donnell's "Farewell to Evening Dances."

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

It is strange that nobody mention Paul Mcgrattan "The Frost is all Over"
Also:
"Stony Steps" - Matt Molloy
"In Good Company"- Kevin Crawford

I will be very happy and I will add it to my list a future Tom McElvogue's recording

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

Never mind a whole album when there's one single track -- Michael Tubridy playing "Pigtown/Tie the Ribbons/The Bag of Potatoes" with Peadar Mercier on bodhran on Chieftains 2. I still get a great buzz playing that set with another fluter.

# Posted on September 15th 2005 by LongNote

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

But there are so many good ones. I would say my two favorite players are Kevin Crawford and Tom Doorley different styles but both awesome.

Longnote - me an' MaxF do that set as standard! Had we only known me an' you could have had some craic doing that last year in Phila!
Och well....

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

Hey guys, I must, if I may, mention another fine Northern Flute CD here, which you should consider for the title - that by one Marcas O'Murchu, which you can find details of at:

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

I always keep coming back to Morning Rory by Mike McGoldrick and the d flute album/duet cd by Kevin Crawford. There's something about Kev that's great - I love his style and his tunes. A year ago I decided that I would learn one set of his properly, every note and every roll so help me God if it killed me!

And then about six months later, a whole spate of new recordings came out with that particular tune. Makes me smile that Kev has all the cool tunes, and plays them brilliantly. He was the guy (along with Mike McGoldrick) who got me into ITM.

How many flute players here have said their favourite flute ITM cd was one of the first they listened to? Just curious if there is a connection (or possibly a psychological occurence hehe)

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

The first real "flute" solo album I've heard was the MOlloy/Brady/Peoples CD. Great stuff, that. I listen to PC more though.

The first albums for which I actually listened to the flute (as opposed to specialist flute solo CDs) were probably, oddly, by the Tannahill Weavers. I still think they are a great band.

Re: What in your opinion is the best ITM 'Flute' record?

Many views expressed above...all valuable.

I would question a trio of different instruments EVEN if it does include MM, much as I love it for its vitality.

Cannot give a best.

However, I am surprised that there is not one mention of Roger Sherlock; maybe Sligo music doesn't count, especially if it's traditional?

Kevin Crawford's album's great.
Then there is the Scottish band Fine Friday with Nuala Kennedy from Dundalk. She's a great flute player

Catherine McEvoy.
