Hey. Does anyone have just some GREAT tunes that they know, but aren't found very often? I want to learn some cool tunes that no one knows here.... instead of playing the same old ones over and over and over and...... you get the drift. Ha. let me know!
Thanks!

Will's Bang Your Frog On The Sofa is good -- someone won the London Fleadh with it a while back. Donegal Tinker is a favorite. And Richie Dwyer's is a little more common, but you don't hear it everywhere, either.
Fox On The Town is pretty common everywhere isn't it? I think Zina might have meant this one: http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display.php/1131. That gets played here quite a bit too though. Fly Fishing Reel is fairly common here also. Donegal Tinker is rare here unfortunately. It's a great tune.
Fox on the Town isn't very common in Tokyo, but I heard it's often played in the eastern side of the country. Don't know which R. Dwyer's Zina mean, but "Fox" is more distinct and attractive, isn't it?
Yeah, Mark had the one I meant right -- I play something more like the second version in the setting we have in the archives. It's a really rockin' tune, that one. I adore it!
I do - but the Corries got the names of the 2 instrumentals the wrong way round on the LP sleeve. The tune they had as "Doran's Favourite" was "The Spanish Cloak". The other tune was a hornpipe which is sometimes called "Dinny O'Brien's", but it has several other names.
Don't forget Paddy O'Brien tunes, Ed Reavy tunes, Josephine Keegan tunes, Vincent Broderick tunes, Sean Ryan tunes, James Kelly tunes, and Sol Foster tunes.
Sol Foster is a good composer from Ann Arbor, MI his can be found at
I should say that the only really good reason for learning tunes is if you like them yourself (unless you have to for a performance), Rosie. Don't worry whether anyone else plays them or not. The chances are that the good tunes will "find you" anyway.
Of course, you'll want to play with others but you don't have to go out of your way to learn every tune they play. Likewise, what's the point of deliberately looking for obscure tunes nobody else knows? You'll find plenty of those soon enough!
I don't nessisarily mean that I want to learn rare tunes... I just want some cool tunes that not EVERYONE plays. And yes, I do want to play with people. I just want to learn some good tunes. Whats so wrong with that?
Nothing wrong with that, but bear in mind that nearly everyone *does* play the good tunes...because they're good tunes. Besides, at least some of even the most popular tunes at your session will be unfamiliar when you hit the session in the next town over, because there are soooo many good tunes and so little time....
Hey, Rosie. I found one I think might interest you...considering it bears your name. It's a reel in Dminor that I've never heard before, and it's an awesome tune. Just search for it under "Rosie's."
Yours,
L.

Re: Cool, rare tunes...
My favorite rare tune is the Fly Fishing reel by Jackie Daly. Not particularly easy to play, but it's a great tune when it is played well.

Lesser-known Paddy Fahy tunes. Richie Dwyer's (aka. Fox on the Town) seems rather popular in OZ. I played it with some musicians from the country.
And try some Jennifer Wrigley tunes:

Re: Cool, rare tunes...
Johny Dorans Favourite, learnt it many years ago from a Corries album. I give it an airing now and then.
You still play it Kenny?

The rest of those people all have published tune collections that you can buy online or at your local trad shop.
The Kane Sisters have great rare tunes on their albums.

Hey Rosie, you want to play tunes that no body knows? Do you not like playing with other people?

Re: Cool, rare tunes...
She might share them with a "select few". Then, she can start an exclusive session with these same people.
I've even seen this sort of thing happen (Gasps of astonishment) in Edinburgh.

Re: Cool, rare tunes...
Kenny, the tune is actually called The Spanish Shawl on the album and sleeve. But hey who cares about a missprint on a 37 year old album?
Well, obviously you of course!
By the way, can you hear strains of The Shaskeen or vice versa in that tune?
