Low whistles and ornamentation

Low whistles and ornamentation

I am an Irish Trad music addict.(Abnett Zouk). Most recently I have expanded to the low whistle to further my melody playing

Question....
I am having problems mastering ornamentation for Irish trad tunes, on my Low (Michael Burke) D. Would it be better to try to execute these on a regular "D" whistle first...and then attempt then on the Low whistle?

Re: Low whistles and ornamentation

As the Kabballah says,
"Quod Superior, Sicut Inferior".
In other words, if it works on a High Whistle, it'll work on a Low Whistle. (Mostly) :)

Re: Low whistles and ornamentation

Since you've only "recently expanded to low whistle" It's not likely that you'll acheive "mastery" of even intermediate level ornamentaion on anywhistle without some serious practice time. By intermediate I mean, cuts, taps, slurs, long and short rolls. Having "problems" at this juncture is pretty normal I would think.

I have a burke Pro Low D, I find that once you get used to the stretch that ornamenting is pretty much the same except for cuts on the second octave. Where you might get away with cutting only using your G and B fingers on a normal D whistle the cuts are much less precise sounding, IE squeakier, on a big D unless you use the fingers closest to the note you are cuting. This isn't such a bad thing, since your cuts on the regular D will sound better as well (especially on a chiffy whistle) if you make this adjustment.

By the way, what do you think of that Minstrel instrument you have?
