It just occurred to me that the first weekend in September is/was Mells Irish Weekend. Does anyone know if it's happening?
It doesn't affect my diary now that I'm half a world away, but as a place to meet and play with other musicians, it had an intimacy sometimes lost in bigger gatherings.
Indeed I played with a number of people who are members of this Session. It was there that I met an amazing fiddle player, Brian Montague. If anyone knows him say Hello please. I haven't found him on this site.
One other thing about Mells is that it is very family orientated, which I think also makes it a bit special.
Gordon Bennett, Brian Montague! That name ( the 2nd one that is! ) takes me back to the late 70s when I spent a brilliant Miltown with Brian & Spike & Dermot & Mairead & Frankie, back when I was a simple Banjo plonker. ( I know - I'm just a Plonker now!!) I followed these guys round all week soaking up the wonderful northern tunes they were playing.
That was easily the best Miltown I ever had.
Yo, Ptarmigan - and do you remember the piper who used to play with Brian Montague ? Was it Micky Morgan ? We listened to them a lot at the Ennis Fleadh in 1977. Often wondered what happened to those two. Mighty players, the pair of them.
Mells Irish Weekend? Is it happening?

So, please say if it still happens.
