What's Your Latest Tune?

What's Your Latest Tune?

Thought I'd post a message here on the Banjo forum! Talk about strange convergences....

ANYWAY! What's the latest tune you've learned? And why?

My latest is the jig Tickle Her Leg with the Barley Straw. Because it was on a tape I had in the car. After awhile I discovered I could simply play it. And I also like it, which helps - but I never really set out to learn it, y'know.

It's from one of Sharon Shannon's earlier CDs.

Talk about strange conveniences..........

Oh Kris, 'we are not worthy'! My oh my - what a wonder kid you are "I could simply play it" - Praise the Lord!!

"but I never really set out to learn it, y'know"
- what you lookin' for here kris - sympathy?
- reaches for Fiddle & starts lament.............................

Oh were reality that simple!

Truth is, most of us 'mere mortals' never really perfect a version of a tune, we are always working on it!!
The fun is with constantly improving & re-moulding our own version!

Phew! I feel much better now that I got that off my chest! :-)

Re: What's Your Latest Tune?

I've never had my leg tickled with a barley straw. Anyone know what it's like? Anyway, latest choon? - The Whistling Postman.

Re: What's Your Latest Tune?

Listen, McGann (I'm gonna call you that now - it's gonna stick, just see if it doesn't) I never said I'd perfected it. I said I could play it.

Re: What's Your Latest Tune?

Re: What's Your Latest Tune?

Uh, are we still listing tunes? I've just learned a lovely slow air by J. Scott Skinner called The Sadness of Life--nice and morbid.

Re: What's Your Latest Tune?

Well that'll teach you to whisper in horses ears, won't it!!

Or perhaps with the Parelli method, you whisper in another orifice altogether? :-)

By the way, what was this thread all about?.............................

Re: What's Your Latest Tune?

Since we're wildly off topic anyway, this should tell you all you need to know about "horse whispering" McGann.

Re: What's Your Latest Tune?

Thanks for that. My wife Sabine, who keeps a horse ( Welsh Cob x Appaloosa ) in the field next to our house will enjoy that.
She tells me to say it doesn't have spots!!

All Banjo related of course!! :-)

Re: What's Your Latest Tune?

Biddy from Sligo from the album Kitty Lie Over.

Why you ask?! Because I'm addicted to the lovely CD and because Caoimhin and Mick kick much ass playing together.

Cheers and I <3 Flat pipes,

Re: What's Your Latest Tune?

Set out to learn "The Plains of Boyle". While I was getting it into my head and fingers (for penny-whistle) I managed to acquire "The Market Raisen Quickstep" and "The Louth Quickstep" (from Red Horse by Geckoes). O yeah, and "The Grey Bull Waltz" by Kathryn Tickell. Next stop "Toss the Feathers". Or maybe some of the variations on "Drowsy Maggie".

Re: What's Your Latest Tune?

While you are sorting out "Drowsy Maggie" you might like to investigate the Scottish tune "Sleepy Maggie"!

Now which came first, the chicken or the egg?

Who cares, they're both good tunes!

Re: What's Your Latest Tune?

still fighting with one of the most difficult ones: mouseskin shoes. good exercise for sleepy fingers (after some weeks of rest).

Re: What's Your Latest Tune?

Hrrmm . . .

One of Robbie Hannan's jigs is the most recent, along wih Gooseberry Buhs.

Both versions of Toss the Feathers are neat tunes and they work well together.

Re: What's Your Latest Tune?

er, that was supposed to be Gooseberry Bush!

# Posted on August 29th 2005 by wormdiet

Re: What's Your Latest Tune?

Ptarmigan, the "Drowsy Maggie" in the tunes section here has seven variations. The Comments mention Sleepy Maggie and emphasize that it isn't the same tune. Ye couldn't email us the ABC if yez have it, could you? Or if one of those variants is it, which one? (But I'm still going for "Toss the Feathers" and its three variants, and maybe the Slow Air "Eire". YES! a SLOW AIR! >gasp!< They still exist!)

Re: What's Your Latest Tune?

Hey Bystander, I just checked out Sleepy Maggie at Tunes &

http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display.php/787

is the tune I know as Sleepy Maggie.

However, you should get someone like 'kenny' to double check, to be sure, to be sure! :-)

Re: What's Your Latest Tune?

Just checked out the dots for Sleepy Maggie in the 'Scottish Fiddler's Session Tune Book &

http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display.php/787

is the same tune - so it's oficial!! Enjoy :-)

Re: What's Your Latest Tune?

Or official even! ;-(
