Good place to get a record player? Sites? Flea Market?!

Good place to get a record player? Sites? Flea Market?!

Well, the Flea Market is the last on my list.

Anyways, I was going through a record store and I happened to stumble upon a Chieftains record "Bonaparte's Retreat". It was 2 frigging 99 so I had to get it. Oh I love the cheapness of records. Well the problem is, once upon a time, I USED to have a record player which is now broken.. Now.. Can anyone direct me to a site/store that has good record players?

Cheers,
Armand

Okay -- got $15,000 USD? http://www.elpj.com/

Or for a list of current manufacturers, see http://audiotools.com/lp.html.

Or buy on e-Bay. put "record turntable" into the search field. :)

Re: Good place to get a record player? Sites? Flea Market?!

I started buyiing records again. They practically give them away at second hand markets.I just went to the store and bought a Lenco turntable with a built in pre-amp,and it only cost 80 euros.I like the warm sound of the albums too.My youngest daughter had only heard Sgt. Pepper's on cd,and when I put the album on she said "What's that?.It sounds so good"
She was right, the cd sounds sterile and flat.I've been rediscovering my record collection.Back to vinyl!

There are a whole bunch of sites on the internet that specialize in "DJ Gear". You can get a cheaper turntable for under $80 from most of them. (These are usually belt drive models that really aren't any good for DJing, but are perfectly fine for listening purposes. Gemini and Numark are manufacturers that make lower price models. If you want something that will last the rest of your life, spend $400 and buy a Technics).

A second hand record deck by Rega or Thorens (try ebay) will eat a technics for sound quality, if not for coolness. But you need an amp and speakers to play it through. If you can befriend someone who knows what they're doing all of these can be picked up for a nominal amount of cash at car boot sales.

Vinyl in good condition does sound superior.

“Vinyl in good condition does sound superior.”

If you’re comparing something that was originally produced for vinyl with a re-release as CD, that’s often true. But it’s not the medium, it’s the mastering process. An old album properly remastered for CD will usually sound at least as good as the vinyl. The problem is that jillions of old recordings have simply been digitized directly without remastering.

Re: Good place to get a record player? Sites? Flea Market?!

Oh…and the sound of an LP depends a lot on the quality of the amplifier. The pre-amp stage has a special frequency equalization curve built into it to correct for the sonic deficiencies of the vinyl medium. The quality of this little piece of electronics has a big effect on the sound.

"A second hand record deck by Rega or Thorens (try ebay) will eat a technics for sound quality"

The problem with a second hand Rega or Thorens is that you don't necessarily know much about it. How's the stylus? Is it a belt drive model with a worn belt? etc.

My point was that the professional quality direct drive Technics tables are built to take a LOT of abuse, having used them extensively in nightclubs and on FM radio. And you might be surprised at the audio quality you get from one of them. Much of the quality comes from the quality of the stylus as well.

Anyway, my guess was that Armand wasn't shooting for the high end audiophile equipment, but more for something affordable to play his Chieftain's record on...

If you're going for sound quality, why not buy a $15K laser turntable ;-)

Armand, Go to Round Again Records in Providence on Wickenden St.. They have refurbs along with funky old LP's, not too much in the way of Irish LP's there though, but there are a few.
