What intrusments do we all play on the Session?

What intrusments do we all play on the Session?

There's got to be an old thread on this, but might as well just ask again. What instruments do we all play?

I play play the fiddle and whistles. There's a start.

Re: What intrusments do we all play on the Session?

Fiddle, that's it. Usually most people have this info in their bios. If you don't, it's a good time to put it in your bio right now. :)

Re: What intrusments do we all play on the Session?

I'm Michael Coleman's piano player for Irish, but I'm primerily a New Orleans style jazz player. I got the gig through an agent that works for one of them big record making companies. They felt like Coleman's fiddle by itself wasn't right for the project, so they brought me on. I had never heard Irish music before I arrived at the studio. Man, that Coleman sure can play a lot of notes on that fiddle... made me dizzy. We cut the record in one take.

Thank you Jack for that great insight - I had always wondered about that. You must be very old now but obviously are blessed with great clarity of recall.

Re: What intrusments do we all play on the Session?

I am a whistle player. I own many whistles, and play most of them (some of them I play only because I feel sorry for them). I have learnt that it is not true that the more whistles you own, the better player you'll be. :-(

I occasionally beat a poor defenceless goat, but only on tunes that I am yet to learn the whistle fingering for. I try to refrain from beating along to tunes I am unfamilliar with.

I recently bought a flute, but it still makes me dizzy when I blow it. Working on it though.

I own a fiddle, but I've never played it. When I know ITM well enough, I'll take it up. (Another 5 years or so.)

There's a guitar in the corner, tuned to DADGAD, that I am eyeing. Not really interested in it, but I do sometimes get the urge to pick out a tune on it. Occasionally I wish I could play it so that I could put a backing track on some of the recordings I make for the slow session.

Re: What intrusments do we all play on the Session?

An "intrusment" is, by definition, a type of musical instrument that is intrusional on the well-being & enjoyment of a session. Examples of this are bodhran, spoons, djembe, maracas etc etc

;-)

Re: What intrusments do we all play on the Session?

Fiddle. Some time ago I played the cello at a session a couple of times as a special request to provide a bass line from the dots, but normally I'd never let my cello see the inside of a pub unless there's a stage area specifically for the musicians.

Re: What intrusments do we all play on the Session?

Piano, concertina and, when there isn't room for a piano, the accordion. Oh dear. Why do so many people hate the accordion? Mine isn't very loud, and I certainly don't dominate sessions with it. Is it worse than the melodoen? if so, why? In what way? Or is it just not cool? Please explain....

Re: What intrusments do we all play on the Session?

ftp, I think the reason that P.A. is so denigrated, is because it's so useful, and the Eb fekkers can't shut you out. The more limited the instrument is, the higher up the hierarchy it is, so you get something essentially useless, like a diatonic flute and it's way up there, or the U.P. which there's only a half a dozen people can actually afford and the fiddle which almost no one can play.... ( Before you get yr draws in a knot, this IS a wind-up.)
Everybody hates yr accordian because you got it all right there in one box. You don't need them,& they resent it.

Squeeze on, sister.
