Never mind warming up I find when I get back from a long session late at night that I just cannot go to bed straight away, be it 1.00am or 4.00am, I need at least 45 minutes winding down, usually by doing a crossword puzzle or going on the Session website for a bit of quiet mischief.
Do you come home exhausted from a session and just want to go to sleep, or do you want to stay up a while longer and maybe talk about it?
I sit with my legs crossed in a meditating position, tie a pink headband round my head and listen to led zepplin with my eyes closed trying to lift off from the ground
I either dive into some work, or drink and watch old movies, the older the better.
When we travel to sessions, usually I'll drive there Min will drive back. Sometimes I sleep in the car on the way back, and -still- find myself up and at it when we get home, with the session's tunes rollicking about in my head.
I've come to plan ahead for the day-after-session around my post-session insomnia. <G>
I usually sit and chat with the wife for a bit, there is usually at least one funny story about what happened at the session or what someone is up to--a colorful bunch are these musicians. Or maybe read a little before turning in. There is a bit of excess energy that has to bleed off before going to bed. Maybe if I was dancing instead of playing, I would be more tired.
Yeah, I need a bit of a cool down. An hour or two of reading is what does it for me. I'm currently working my way through Burton's translation of the Thousand Nights and a Night, which also acts as a concordance for learning Arabic.
I'm usually too off my rocks these days. But then I go up the hill, open another one and crash out in front of the telly. Sad but true. When I used to do paid gigs and sessions in obscure (for me) parts of London and Kent, I'd have to drive home 30-90 minutes. That worked off the adrenaline. So maybe I need to get out more...no, maybe I need to stay in more, like a normal dad. I dunno. Great session last night. I'm gonna chill for a few weeks. See youse later, guys.
Straight away to bed for me and into dream land, a great place I might add as long as St. Brendan’s Fair Isle wasn’t the last song I sang before going out the pub door. If that was the case then dream land is pretty funky.
Generally after six or so glasses of the nectar (well that’s the count I give my bride anyway) and other disposition enhancing remedies, I sleep really well. The trick is to be able to wait until I am back home and in bed before dozing. I still haven’t figured out why those folks behind me at the traffic lights are so impatient. Those car horns can really startle a fellow at that hour of the morn.
Usually am high as a kite (without any chemical or alcoholic help) so have to cool down for an hour or so, e.g. watch crap on TV or read something light, do crossword, etc. Usually about 4am by the time I go to bed, sigh, lucky it's only weekends.
we've recently had the tv reinstated (after 8 yrs without it), and i'm still holding out from turning it on as i use to years ago
but with 2 flasks of tea and biscuits after the gigs before driving the gear back (and people off), i'm usually more tired than i would be had i been drinking
. . .so no problem hitting the sack, sometimes after a blast of Purple ( _which isn't a drug by the way)
I certainly cannot sleep after a session. I usually edit the recording of the night's session to remove all the talky bits. That takes several hours, and I always regret it the following day at work. Otherwise it's the mindless telly thing for me too.
Straight to bed for me after a gig.
The rest of the band get the whisky out afterwards. One night the band was presented with a litre of Glenlivet as a thank you, which we quartered into water bottles. Three of the band finished it off immediately they got home.

Re: Cooling down
I *have* to have a cooling down/decompression period. Crossword puzzles are my current sedative.

Re: Cooling down
So long as it's only with one hand, there, Andy.
I can plop right into bed straight from the door. No troubles sleeping, usually, if it's that late.

Re: Cooling down
A couple of bits of marmite and tomato on toast (to soak up some ale) and half hour of mindless telly.
