Tune Names

Hi Gang,
I have a problem...I record lots of tunes at various sessions and such but almost all of the time I do not know the names of these tunes. So what I would like is to have someone listen to mp3s (on a website) and tell me the names of tunes. I am willing to pay for this service (perhaps 50 cents per tune?) since I have a hard time recalling tunes when I do not know the names. This would be a great help to me. Obviously they need to be named correctly but that is easy to check since once the name is known the sheet music can be looked up on this site!. If anyone would like to make a few bucks and help me please email me
Thanks!

Re: Tune Names

A cheaper way would be to ask the person playing the tune. With that said, they may not know the name of the tune either.
Personally, I'd concentrate more on the actual tune rather than title.

Re: Tune Names

Yeah, what he said - spot on Emily, mate. Don't worry too much about the titles. But if you really want to know the titles, learn some abc basics and type your abc into the google search box. 99 times out of 100 it'll come up with your tune.

Re: Tune Names

$20 per title and I'll be your name-o-tune man. :-D

Re: Tune Names

I'll do it for $19.00.

Re: Tune Names

Or you could ask me at a session. My chages are reasonable.

If you don't read ABC or dots you could download an ABC converter and go through a few tunes on this site, starting off with more common ones.

Re: Tune Names

I'm terrible for remembering the names of tunes, but would highly recommend Kenny due to his encyclopaedic knowledge of tune names (he'll usually be able to give you a number of alternative names too, as well as which keys they'll be played in).

However, if you're wanting interesting names, I'll make em up for you for the bargain price of $10 per title!

Re: Tune Names

If anybody charges this guy money, I will come round and burn their house down. :)

gr_geek, why not just send them to interested parties; I'm sure there are loads of people who will gladly identify your tunes purely for the fun of it.

Re: Tune Names

I doubt if anyone was being serious - I wasn't.

Yeah, send us out some of your session tapes - that's my favourite rendering of the music.

Re: Tune Names

I didn't think so, but there's some people I just don't trust here
(Bridie Burke, for example).

Re: Tune Names

On average, every tune seems to have up to half-a-dozen or more names, and a single tune name can be apparently be associated with a similar number of tunes :-)
I’ve long given up trying to tie up one with the other. Life is too short.

Re: Tune Names

Apparently another tune site (www.tunedb.com) allows searching by the first few notes of a tune (http://tunedb.woodenflute.com/tune_search_ABC_logic.html). It's run by a very good flute player Richard Moon. If you know the tune in ABC format, give it a go.

Of course as others have mentioned, names of traditional tunes are a bit 'variable' - many people just named the tune after the person that taught it to them.. hence O'Sullivans Polka etc

Re: Tune Names

fineman, that looks like a very handy link you posted.

However, does anyone know of any sites, or even books which will give a discography for tunes when they've been identified? It'd be dandy if there was a site which took you through the whole process, but I'd be surprised if there was such a comprehensive resource.

Re: Tune Names

I've actually heard that Phillipe Varlet charges for that very service, ie identifying obscure tune names for folks. Can anyone confirm that or his going rate?

Re: Tune Names

Thanks very much baglady, although I was aware of that site already. Anyone know of any other sites/resources (also re Scottish music if possible).

Re: Tune Names

Here's what I do...I have about 55 tunes in my tunebook, and I printed them out (in trad. staff notation) and I'm not adding any more until I learn those. I made an index for them; Jigs on one page, Reels and Hornpipes on another, and wrote the notes for the first two measures of each tune. Now, at my session (and I'm new at this) I can find the tune quickly.

I know that music at a session is a no-no, but I play at the slow session and we are all learning...

Re: Tune Names

Greg,
Sticking to a small number of tunes and learning them well is a good way to start. Take advantage of the slow tempo and put ornaments in from the start also. Do try to wean yourself from the music as time goes by--try reading the first time through, and then look away and see how you do. And if you get a chance to learn tunes by ear from someone who is willing to break them down for you, that is a good way to train your ear.

Re: Tune Names

we've to sort a rake of tune names pretty quickly now ourselves and Kane O'Rourke tells me the best man in london for this is Mick ''steady- as- a- rock'' O'Connor _a great banjohead of sound (''the late'') character

_the last gig we did with him was at The Savoy (no less) when he also called the dances and where, almost bizarrely, we shared the stage with Mo Molem, a great woman of our times who very sadly died today, RIP
