Last night @ the Plough we had a really good harp player drop by and it changed the entire mood of the session. Why don't we discuss really great surprises we've had instead of musical ( or aesthetic ) pet peeves for a change? Any really great players or semi-celebrities brighten yer sesh recently?
Chris Smith and his lovely partner Angie were just here, that was lovely, and we're looking forward to Will Harmon and his wife Rose and their two strapping sons coming in September. Tonight, Michael Reid, who we hardly ever get the chance to play with, will be guesting at our regular "session" (it's not truly a session in that the bar thinks it's a performance, but we treat it like a session). Should be a blast!
(Looks around furtively to see if any Geordie Aussies are hanging around in their Special Constabulary Gestapo Session Police uniforms and jackboots, waiting to pounce on anyone vaguely suspected of name-dropping...)
Yes of course - down around here:
Mick Mul**CLANG!!**vey
Mike McGold**CLANG!!**rick
Paddy Gla**CLANG!!**ckin
Loads more. Feeling too self-conscious to continue.
Is this The Plough Inn located in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire? Just wondering since apparently my Great Great Great Aunt Ellen Albone and her husband John Hawkins ran it around 1870. I just learned of my family in England from a relative there who I just found online this weekend, and this was a bit of the Albone history she passed down. I would definitely have to make a visit to the session there if it is the same one!
OK so we had Andy Irvine in recently & Mick Moloney a few years back, & they can add sparkle, but big names don't necessarily guarantee a great session.
I remember many moons ago at Girvan F F, we had a cracking session going round a large table in the hotel when all of a sudden Jackie Daly dropped in on our session & we all froze, it was most embarrassing.
I think this is just a thinly disguised excuse for folk to name drop & I have decided that I want no part of it so I'm off to apply to join Geordie Aussie's Special Constabulary Gestapo Session Police.
OK so I also fancy the uniform and jackboots too.
Well, after all my wife, Sabine, already has her riding whip at the ready - & I'm fairly ready for a good bout of 'lunging'.
I've been hosting sessions at the Plough since 1988 and the list of amazing "drop-ins" is staggering. If I started naming names it would send Dow into a tizzy-fit he would never recover from.
On of the most unusual ones I'd have to say was when Christy Barry stopped by the night before the earthquake in 89. Before the night was over he was standing on the table we were all seated around playing 2 whistles at one time. At the end of his performance he made a quick and unplanned exit from the table. No one was hurt but we lost a few drinks. Needless to say he was p*ssed out of his head.
It was great to see Luke again last night -- great harper -- and I look forward to seeing him in the next couple of weeks while the circus is in town. He could be coming to a session near you anyday now. If Barnum & Bailey comes to your town Luke is likely to show up.
Even if it's "a thinly disguised excuse for folk to drop name...,"
I like to hear who people think are musicians worth posting about. In a way, even if it's "disguided"...it's also highly revealing on several levels, such as who a person finds to be truely marvelous muso.
Nahh, but no worries Pete. But my guess is that, judging by the persona he projects here, albeit protected by the action of merely depatching words into the ether, the Geordie wretch down under is jealous because he doesn't get to go to sessions where good musicians go, because he's an obnoxious little toad that most normal musicians avoid at all costs. But that's not in any way an insult. Merely conjecture. A guess.
This thread makes me think of some of those young & not so young eedjits you see being interviewed on Pop Idol!
When asked why they are putting themselves through it all, they often just say "because I want to be famous" - that's it!
So the next best thing to being famous is to be able to talk about someone famous you have seen, or met, or better still, who has played at your session, well I'm sorry but Duh!!
You must admit, those folk who come home from festivals & just go on & on & on about all the famous musicians they saw, give you, or at least they give me, a dose of the screaming heeby jeebies!!
Please don't do it!!
Yes, by all means talk about the lovely music you played, the new tunes you learned, even the new friends you made, but DON'T DON'T DON'T I repeat DON'T tell me about all the 'famous' musicians you saw or met. I don't care!
Let's be honest, in the grand scheme of things Trad Musicians are never going to be REALLY famous, are they. So get a grip!
OK Have I passed the audition yet?
If so, when do I get my uniform?
But seriously - it seems you're missing the point of Faust's thread - (unless I've got it wrong) - the question was: how did some exceptional muso brighten up a local sesh? (Some of which can be quite dull, on a week to week basis, let's face it.)
*dusting herself off* Now then Mr., uh, Gilder? I advise rest, lots of fluids & comfort measures as needed. Here are some drugs that should help your condition. Funny I never realized you played piano.... Thanks for letting me join the elite guest list of celebrity musos who have played the Plough (oh wait, wasn't I already on it?), but sorry, I've got to get going, my beachside mansion full of nurses in hot tubs in Orange County awaits.
Cooool! Are you going to stop in Denver on the way out there?! Hope so. I'm off to bed. I'll check in here first thing tomorrow am to see what the news is! Yay!
Well, (sigh), I don't have a regular session to go to at all - so consequently there won't be any "Great guest musicians" coming to our non-existant session. I wouldn't be wanting to name-drop anyway.......
Tell me though, what is a "regular" session, is it one where eveyone drinks too much and goes to the bog a lot (I've been to many sessions like that)? Or where there are people there who've eaten too much bran?.................
Tommy Peoples showed up at our session last year, he didn't change the session much though, his playing of course was great but he wasn't sticking out, just playing.
Don't worry about it v - if you look back through my profile at some of the discussions I posted recently, you'll see that I was savaged by a pit bull (*snort*). So really, the best thing to do, is enjoy the craic and give as good as you get! I've recently acquired an extremely thick (hopefully dog-bite resistant) skin!!
Hi Cath, changed my profile recently, purely out of badness combined with a bad sense of humour. I actually meant to say history - not profile regarding threads I've started! For my sins, I stir with a guitar - which is marginally better than a bodhran.
Zina, I'm just trying to be nice to v and not let him/her get discouraged from participating on the site. Now where does Jeremy hide those smiley faces when you want one? Must look......
Hi Ron, have a go at that fiddle you've got.
I found going from guitar to fiddle by way of the mandolin quite painless. I think others on this site have followed the same course. Think seriously about it, personally, I could never go back to playing guitar
Hi Cath, I already scrape on the fiddle, but wouldn't inflict my playing on the general public presently - I'm quite thoughtful that way! But seriosly, having been a closet player for many years, I'm planning on concentrating more on it - goodness knows how many tunes I've absorbed over the years. Well, probably 95% + of lots of tunes, rather than whole tunes - not too much effort required to get the other notes - however, turning them into music is another thing altogether!
