We had a great event last night here in Ottawa, with John Dahms playing some of his competition pieces, as well as a few other tunes, with friends before he heads off to Ireland. It was a packed house in Rasputins with everyone turning out to wish John all the best.
Good luck John!
Anyone know if ALL the Bunting tunes are accepted at Fleadh competitions these days?
I believe Comhaltas have only recently actually accepted that Carolan tunes are Irish Music?!
It's not that long ago too, that you were not permitted to play some of the wonderful Donegal tunes like Mazurkas, Flings and Barndances at these competitions.
Makes me wonder why they accepted the English Hornpipes, Scottish Reels & French Jigs?!?!
All, I believe, part of Comhaltas' master plan to standardise Irish Music & do away with regional variations & styles!
Any comments?
I'm sure ye had a great night - John's a sweet player with great spirit in his music.
Better than all is that the competition is but a small part of a bigger journey for him - 3 months of seeking out the older connections to the tradition and trying to learn as much as possible from them. I'm looking forward to his reports from across the pond.
Ptarmigan, your application of punctuation is absolutely baffling.
After reading your post several times through, you have only managed to convince me that you are emphatically questioning your own tentative beliefs, which I can't even remember by the time I finish wading through the disjointed grammar and symbols.
I actually found Ptarmigan's post extremely coherent. I'm not sure where you found the "disjointed grammer" and I would imagine that Ptarmigan's "application of punctuation" (I take it you mean putting an exclaimation mark after a full stop?) is merely used to emphasise a question.
Perhaps Steph it is a dialect thing though? I'm guessing you are not from Ireland and perhaps this is where the confusion lies?
I have noticed a recent trend with some users on this website, that a lot of people seem to be nitpicking on the most trivial of matters, such as your "wading through the disjointed grammar and symbols" and "your application of punctuation is absolutely baffling" remarks Steph. I already am aware of the irony in me saying this, but it's making these discussions/posts or whatever you want to call them very unpleasant, and I would imagine that it is deterring people from bothering to contribute to this website that Jeremy as made such a good job of setting up. Valid discussions are very welcome, but stuff like this is just nasty and unwelcoming.
With regard to the submission of the wonderful tunes collected by Edward Bunting in Fleadh competitions Ptarmigan, I have contaced CCÉ and will let you know of the outcome of their response.
Steph, to find the full relevance of Ptarmigan's post, it might be useful to read the following threads (some of them also with occasional pointless unpleasant remarks, which I wish would cease...) :
This might give a better insight to why Ptarmigan posted his query about the acceptance of Buting collected tunes in Fleadh competitions / contests. I hope my grammar and punctuation aren't too baffling and disjointed for you also.
Divide and Rule seems to have worked here in Comhaltas' favour! Important point made by Dick wrt Donegal tunes of the non-standard variety. Don't these guys travel the country or even listen to Altan albums if nothing else?
I think I may have been giggling to myself at the time, thinking of "Eats, Shoots and Leaves". Anyway, he requested comments, and I provided mine.
As long as we're up on our moral high horses here, I think I'll contribute a few others:
As the original post was concerned largely with the send-off of John Dahms, I found Ptarmigan's post highly irrelevant to the topic.
Furthermore, and as you most generously pointed out, these comments already existed in several other threads. I had previously read them, and yet managed to find little relevance in their appearance here.
While I largely agree with the content of Ptarmigan's manifesto, I suppose I don't enjoy being repeatedly bludgeoned with it.
It wasn't putting an exclaimation mark after a full stop that was the baffling bit - it was the exclaimation mark and question mark together?!
Are you asking us or telling us?!
And there was me half-expecting to hear other heart-warming stories of brave young musicians heading off to the "Big One". I should have known better...
Sorry Ian, for sending your thread off track.
I realised my mistake & added it as a new topic, but too late to save your one from going bananas!
That said, I do love the side-tracks almost as much as the serious replies.
I'm sure you are not a sentimental fool - just a caring individual!
Another reason for a lack of on target response could be that perhaps overseas entrants place far more importance on competing at the All-Ireland than folks here do?
Anyway, I hope John has a great time at the Fleadh.
Now must go find my own copy of "Eats, Shoots & Leaves".
