Younger generation musicians

Younger generation musicians

Who would you consider to be the greats of the younger generations? I had this conversation with a friend of mine at the weekend. We were having a conversation saying who we thought would end up taking the crowns from these guys when they retire. Let me know who you think will or has taken the crown from these amazing musicians. These are just the guys and instruments we were comparing with younger generation musicians

Matt Molloy - Flute
Tommy Peoples - Fiddle
Paddy Keenan - Pipes
Noel Hill - Concertina
Joe Burke - accordian
Arty McGlynn - guitar
Donal Lunney - Bouzouki

Re: Younger generation musicians

Mike McGoldrick, Sylvain Barou - Flute
Declan Folan, Cíarán Ó Maonaigh, Liam O'Connor, Siobhán Peoples - Fiddle
John McSherry, Conor McKeon, Eliot Grasso, Fra McIlduff, Paddy O'Hare - Pipes
Micheal O’Raghallaigh, Edel Fox, Padraig Rynne - Concertina
Damien Mullane, Seán Óg Graham, Sean O'Kane - Box
Donal Clancy, Paul McSherry, Tony Byrne, Tim Edey - Guitar
Kevin Dorris - Bouzouki

Some of those lads are pushing the "younger generation" tag slightly. Not mentioning any names!

Of course, these are just the ones I know of.

Re: Younger generation musicians

23mice, you sound as if you might be from the younger generation yourself?
Anyway, I think it's a very subjective thing about who is the best or "wears the crown" and equally so about who takes over. I'd rather not take part in this but I'm sure many others will. We'll just end up with the usual big list of names.

Re: Younger generation musicians

Conor McEvoy is the best fiddle player I've heard in ages and he's only around 18, absolutely brilliant, he was the star of the fiddle concert in the last frankie kennedy festival in Donegal, and that concert included Tommy Peoples! The concert also included two other players with great potential Liam O'Connor and Ciarán O'Maonaigh.

Don't think anyone will ever reach the hights of Matt Molloy, he is a unique musician.

On guitar Shane McGowan is brilliant and already better than McGlynn in my opinion. And before anyone asks, he is not the same guy as the legendary singer-songwriter!

On accordian there is either Damien Mullane, Liam O'Sullivan or Mairtin Tourish.

On pipes there is a great player called Tim Dowd over here in London.

You also left out banjo and bodhrán, for these instruments look no further than the Griffin brothers Matt and Dan, both All Ireland champions.

There is an amazing bouzouki player who plays in the Celt in Dublin every Sunday, not sure of his name, but he could be the next Lunny.

Re: Younger generation musicians

Yes, Conan, I hear what you're saying in your comment "of course, these are just the ones I know of".

What about the really talented musicians who get no mention?

I'm going to a flute teacher for tuition, he's the son of Paddy Ban O'Broin. Sean is his name. You would want to hear him play. He's as good as Matt Malloys and Seamus Egan. Of course, this is just my opinion.

Re: Younger generation musicians

I agree with the comment about Matt Molloy. He is different class. But I forgot to mention Harry Bradley; pretty special player.

# Posted on July 27th 2005 by Conán McDonnell

Tim Edey

If you are going to put Tim Edey in the guitar section you should also put him in the box section, he's a better box player than guitarist!
Tony Byrne is great too, forgot about him.

Agree with Conor McKeon on the pipes

Re: Younger generation musicians

funny you mention Harry Bradley, just got a CD of his from ebay for around £2. Will give it a listen but from seeing him playing I agree he's brilliant, but can't see him bettering Matt Molloy.

Re: Younger generation musicians

Tim Edey is fricking marvelous on just about everything he plays, the rat.

Re: Younger generation musicians

Just different.

Didn't James Galway say that Matt was the best flute player in the Western hemisphere? And he should know, 'cos he's from Belfast - the home of Irish music.

# Posted on July 27th 2005 by Conán McDonnell

Re: Younger generation musicians

agreement all the way. Harry Bradley - class, Molloy - different class altogether. Best up and coming flute player is Michael King from west Limerick. plays with the group Nuada.

On the Tim Edey subject, the guy is class. Had a few tunes with him in Abbeyfeale on the may bank holiday weekend and I was tempted to give up the box after seeing what the guy could do!!!

Re: Younger generation musicians

Damien Mullane is pretty phenomenal on the box. Watching him made me want to take it up, and feel like packing it in, simultaneously(!)

Re: Younger generation musicians

In know we were concentrating on instrument players but thought I'd give a mention to a girl called Roisín who is an amazing singer. Can't remember her surname but she's a bit mad and from Dublin. I really think she is the next Triodhna Ni Domhnaill.

# Posted on July 27th 2005 by The Tune Composer

Re: Younger generation musicians

Adian Burke is the best fiddler I've heard in a long time.

# Posted on July 27th 2005 by dafydd

Re: Younger generation musicians

frisbee, would the singer be Roisin Chambers by any chance?

# Posted on July 28th 2005 by Squish

Re: Younger generation musicians

yes Roisín Chambers exactly, class singer, don't know if she realises how much potential she has. I don't often get impressed by singers, there are many famous ITM singers I can't stand, but Roisín is a star in the making.

here we go again, music competitions

Re: Younger generation musicians

There are literally too many people who could fit in this list. In Baltimore alone there are some really talented, rather young musicians (as in early-mid 20s or late teens) who in 10 years might become exceeding well known on Box, Fiddle, Pipes, flute etc. In Perl River NY there are bunch of kids in their mid-teens who are shaping up into some really talented musicians.

I am sure the same is true of Chicago, NY, Boston, London, and a bunch of other places as well as many parts of Ireland.
Who knows, if ITM retains its current popularity in a dozen years we might have so much talent we really can't pick who the best box/concertina/flute/fiddle players are.

Re: Younger generation musicians

Yer man Caoimhin O Raghallaigh might sound like he's been playing the fiddle for 100 years or so, but he's just a pup yet.

Emmet Gill is much the same on pipes but you never really hear of him unless you run in piping circles or see him playing with the Kane Sisters. Oh right them too!

Have to throw in my shameless gushing over Micheal O Raghallaigh's concertina playing. Never was moved in any particular direction by the instrument till I heard his playing.

Re: Younger generation musicians

Steph, I had the same thought when I heard "The Nervous Man"! Just like you, I'm generally pretty un-excited by concertina...not down on it, just unexcited.....

I love that, when an album makes you rethink your attitudes, when it's just such damn good music that it doesn't matter that it's not your favorite instrument.

Re: Younger generation musicians

Caitlín Nic Gabhann is an amazing concertina player from Co.Meath, and a great composer and dancer too. She has the same style as Micheál Ó Raghallaigh.

Re: Younger generation musicians

Strange trad you missed out the Banjo?

# Posted on March 19th 2007 by bazouki dave

Re: Younger generation musicians

well ''bazouki dave'' if you noticed the comment by the person who started this discussion you may have noticed the absence of a banjo. and to be honest no one comes to mind. perhaps gerry o connor has rubbed off too much on young banjo players. thats not to say theres not good players out there im just not a big fan of the banjo. similar to the way i haven't mentioned the piano accordian...

# Posted on March 27th 2007 by trad!

Re: Younger generation musicians

'frisbee' was wonderin the name of the bozouki player in the celt every sunday. you're probably referring to Colm Ó Broin. A great backer!!

# Posted on March 27th 2007 by trad!

Re: Younger generation musicians

What about Martin Tourish and Mirella Murray for PA - they are both fine musos.

Re: Younger generation musicians

I agree with all the above and would say its definitely the best list on this whole page. I've seen all these musicians at various festivals and would say that they would be the best line up to represent Irish Trad Music for their age group.

Well done "Mr.Gavin" .

Re: Younger generation musicians

Lists like these may be annoying to some, but they are not completely useless. They can provide useful information to lurkers who are just starting to learn about The Music--say, some poor soul who has encountered only Riverdance, or the Corrs, but who wants to learn more. A list of respectable trad players can help point them in the right direction.

# Posted on July 8th 2008 by John Galt

Re: Younger generation musicians

byheck - best list only if you like that style. I prefer conan's list - though some of those are nowhere near Young musicians!

I like Ryan Molloys fiddle playing too.
