Re: Buying a McIlroy online

hi , i had the same thought 3 years ago ; i wanted a Lowden guitar and saw a wonderful O35 on ebay.
I live in Italy and the seller was in the USA.
At the end I bid and won the auction.... after a few minuts i got panic and thought i was crazy to buy an expensive guitar without even trying it...
After two months and some troubles i got my guitar .... i fell in love with her.... far better than expected ( it was the first " first class" guitar i bought ).
I think McIlroy are beautiful guitars, great for finger picking
( not a great difference from Lowden ) ; i tried one in walnut and cedar and almost bought it ( my wife would kill me..)
It s hard to be disappointed by stuff like that; anyway i think it s better to try before buying.

Re: Buying a McIlroy online

Shoreline is a very good dealer. I've had some small business with them, but I would definitely trust them to see to my satisfaction with the purchase of a serious guitar. And many of the guitars they carry are really serious! <G>

When working with established dealers online, just try to make sure that you ask all the questions that come up for you ahead of the purchase. Any questions, don't dismiss any of your concerns, ask them all.

I like the McIlroys, and while I've never heard one, I'd love to be able to buy one thru Shoreline.

As for buying high-quality instruments online, I generally tell folks who have not bought online before not to make their first online purchase a high-priced, high-quality one. The anxiety is often too great a factor and it can impede communications, which are essential to a good process.

Having said that, I've traded audio recording gear and instruments online since about '94, when there was only text onscreen, and no 'feedback', no eBay and essentially, no sheriff in town to help if you got jammed up or scammed. It's much easier now, tho not without serious risk.

I have bought some great instruments online, through auctions and from individuals, but I think it best to treat it like gambling: Don't bet what you can't afford to lose. If one is shopping for The One Instrument That One Can Afford And Will Use For A Long Time, go shopping where one can put hands on it, hear it and talk with humans in person, where there's a warranty and repair facilities and where one can build a relationship with live people.

But again, Shoreline is great and I think you'll do fine there. Just ask everything there is to ask of them first, and have a good relationship with them as it goes.

I hope you have a smooth time of it, and completely enjoy your McIlroy!

All the best

Re: Buying a McIlroy online

Edja,

I bought my Mcilroy (an A25) from Shoreline almost three years ago, and have nothing but good things to say about the folks at Shoreline.

John Fowler, the owner, is a stand-up guy and will work hard to help you get the right guitar and will stand behind his stuff. Talk with him about what you're looking for in a guitar, your playing style, etc., and he'll help you find the right guitar for you.

Shoreline has a no questions asked, 10 day approval period on all their guitars; as far as I know no other online dealer is offering that kind of approval period (or Shoreline's free shipping)

John's a man of his word and will treat you fairly. I was very impressed with Shoreline and the Mcilroys, and have ordered another Mcilroy through him (an A30 cutaway that should be here real soon now :-).

According to Dermot's website (www.mcilroyguitars.co.uk/),
Perfect Pitch in Dublin is his biggest UK dealer and should have some on hand for you to try out.

Drop me a note offline if you want to talk about this more; it's jwillner@radford.edu. I'm off to Swannnoa on Sunday but will be checking my email sporadically

Re: Buying a McIlroy online

I've never purchased a guitar from Shoreline, but I have purchased a fair number of other items from them. They ship very quickly, have great prices with no add-on for regular shipping. I had to do an overnight shipment once, and indeed it showed up the very next day, even though I ordered it after 3 PM EST.

Their customer service is great. When I ordered an Ultrasound amp from them, my order was mixed up with that of someone else by the Ultrasound warehouse and I ended up with a lesser model (NOTE: not Shoreline's fault). Shoreline got the orders straightened out very quickly.

That's pretty long, in my experience. 3 to 5 days seems to be standard.
