Robert Altman to direct 'A Prairie Home Companion'
Robert Altman to direct 'A Prairie Home Companion'
Not strictly Irish Traditional Music, but Garrison Keillor's been good to trad over the years. Plus he's got a wicked cast lined up:
Virginia Madsen (Sideways) and L.Q. Jones will star in director Robert Altman's A Prairie Home Companion, says The Hollywood Reporter.
They join Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, John C. Reilly, Woody Harrelson, Lily Tomlin, Maya Rudolph and Lindsay Lohan. Garrison Keillor, host of the celebrated radio show of the same name, will play himself in the film.
Based on a script by Keillor, the fictionalized story unfolds backstage during a fateful broadcast of the show, which the players discover is to be their last. Madsen will play a dangerous woman, while Jones will play a musician who's been a regular on the show for years. Streep and Tomlin play the last two sisters remaining from a five-sister country act, Lohan plays Streep's daughter, Harrelson and Reilly are singing cowboys Dusty and Lefty, Rudolph plays the stage manager, and Kline plays the show's security guard.
The film is set to shoot next month in Minneapolis.
Re: Robert Altman to direct 'A Prairie Home Companion'
The other day, when I saw a little blub in the Hollywood news that Lindsey Lohan's next movie was "A Prairie Home Companion," I thought I was perhaps dreaming, as it seemed like an odd pairing. But now that I see what they are up to, I am looking forward to it. Mr. Keillor's show is one of the few places where the "tradition" of radio variety shows still continues--and he has had many trad acts on over the years, including Solas, Battlefield Band, Bain/Cunningham, Boys of the Loch. Maybe we should lobby for a cameo by Aly and Phil in the movie to give the world some more exposure to the pleasures of traditional music (but I can hear the trad police critics now, "the folks that came to like traditional music through watching the Prairie Home Companion movie are not real traditional music lovers, blah, blah, blah").
Re: Robert Altman to direct 'A Prairie Home Companion'
I saw Garrison Keillor once at a book-signing in Minneapolis. He looked like he just got out of bed, and in fact, I think he was wearing a bathrobe. At least that's how I remember it. I love the annual joke show. He has also had Natalie MacMaster on.
Re: Robert Altman to direct 'A Prairie Home Companion'
He had Altan on, too. They really should be in the movie version.
I loved the bit where he introduced the members of the band to the audience, when he got to Mairéad he started 'spelling' her last name. Pure Keillor...
Re: Robert Altman to direct 'A Prairie Home Companion'
Yeah, it's all the rage here in Minneapolis. I went to register for being an extra on the movie today. That'd be cool if it had some Irish music in it... If I ever see Altman I'll ask him.

Excellent! Sounds like a great movie; the show itself is a must-hear.

Can't wait. How much actual live music will there be ?
I remember Meryl Streep singing as Carrie Fisher, and Lily Tomlin in "Nashville".
