slow airs

slow airs

does anyone know of any recordings of slow airs played by a flute (or in the range of the flute) that i could learn real quick by ear? unfortunately, an uncle of one of my friends died, and i have been asked to play at the funeral. although i would say i am up to the task musically, i only know one slow air. i dontk now if i have enough time to prepare much, but i'm gonna try and see what i can do. i still need to go through my recordings to see what i can find.

the only air i know is in a weird key (f nat, c sharp, and b flat), so weird keys arent a problem, it just has to be in the flutes range.

i dont know how much they want me to play, and i know this might be a sort of naive request, but i dont think its really an option to turn down the request so i have to go ahead with this. i would just use sheet music, but i am not so naive as to think that i would be able to do an air justice, not being well versed, if i learned it off sheet music. i can pick up a tune quick enough (i learned the air i know now before i knew how to learn by ear and it was easy), so i would be able to learn a tune well as long as i had a recording.

if no one can think of anything thats ok because i just thought of 2 or 3 airs i have recorded that i could use once i find.

Knock the tempo down to about 25-30 on your ABC player and it's close enough.

Re: slow airs

ok, so my mom said that i'll be playing during the mass (which she neglected to tell me this morning) so i'll only be playing one or 2 tunes at most.

sorry about the post, i was a bit worried this morning.

Re: slow airs

You have nothing to apologise for. We are sorry for your loss. I am sure you will do the man proud.
From my experience playing "Taps" over a few military graves, be ready to focus your attention on the tune you are playing. Music, especially slow, tends to bring out the sobs at a funeral, so don't be surprised when it happens.

Re: slow airs

instead of trying to learn a new tune really quickly, why don't you take a tune you already know and slow it write down?

Re: slow airs

I mean, slow it RIGHT down, don't write it down slowly :)

Re: slow airs

I know it sounds obvious and corny (and probably heretical on this site), but 'Danny Boy' always goes down well at funerals if played sensitively on unaccompanied flute.
Equally, while it's not an air, the melody of 'Only Our Rivers Run Free' can be a beautiful slow tune on the flute.
I fully echo AlBrown's advice about keeping your focus.
I wish you well.

Re: slow airs

Lochabar no more;
The Flowers of the Forest;
Old Swarra - this was a Shetland tune Aly Bain has played - something to do with not mentioning the person, only something of theirs, like an old shirt;
Lamentation of Owen Roe O'Neill.
There is, I believe it has been explained recently, a problem with posting slow airs on this site; try advance Googling with "Lament of or for..."
And, yes, keep your focus and try to take your time about it. In a situation like this you honour the person with your performance.

Re: slow airs

Arran Boat Song and Farewell to Glasgow are both easy and in my opinion, lovely slow airs, and they're both in the Tunes section here.

My condolences to you.

Re: slow airs

The Lament for Owen Roe O'eill is a great slow air
Listen to Noillaig Casey playing it on fiddle and then transpose it to flute.
PS It is not the Carolan piece of the same name
