When Tim Britton and Pat Egan played here recently they played a set of three Leslie Harris tunes that were wonderful.
I asked Tim about it and he directed me to the first Trian CD (Liz Carroll, Billy McComiskey & Daithi Sproule), on which the Harris set is the first on the CD. It starts with the tune called, I believe, "The Torrid Romance".
A folklorist told me that Harris worked in the Dublin Pub in Washington, D.C., and began to play late in life.
Are there more tunes by Harris? I'm really, really enjoying the se three!
What a coincidence, I just got a Leslie Harris tune tonight at the session! (Mostly b/c I played Charlie Harris's reel... thanks Dow!) Unfortunately, it was only given to me as 'Leslie Harris's.' I know it's a crime to be from Baltimore & not know the first Trian CD but I'll see what I can't find out from Pat or Billy or Peter & I'll let you know. BTW Trian will be reunited at the Catskills the summer since Billy, Liz & Daithi will all be there & they will be playing as Trian. Yay!
Yeah, Pat mentioned that the Trian would be playing there again. I sure wish they'd do some more dates together. Liz will be here (Bloomington, Indiana) with John Doyle on July 8. Woohoo!
Here's the Leslie Harris set from Trian I:
The Torrid Romance/The Boys from Chicago/P.J. McComiskey's
I lived near someone with the same name about 20 years ago and I knew she played B/C and wrote some tunes, so if it is the same Leslie then I think she may be designing and selling very detailed renaissance costumes for the festivals. I remember about that time I went up to the Catskills for the week with a bunch of Baltimore folks. Had quite a time but I don't remember any workshops just pub sessions till 3 AM and the state troopers showing up to tell everyone to go to bed. I had tunes in my head nonstop for two days after.
fiddlersgreen is correct, it's that self-same box player who makes the beautiful dresses! The tune given to me is in fact A Torrid Romance, & my source only knows one other Harris tune, probably the second in that set, but I don't think she wrote the PJ McComiskey, unless the sleeve notes indicate otherwise. She's still around somewhere.... if I find anything out, I'll let you know.
There are much worse places to spend your time on this planet than Sedona, Arizona, my old stomping ground.... I wonder if there are any sessions? There weren't any in Flagstaff when I lived out there, only contra stuff.... wow.
Great stuff on Ms. Harris! Wow, costumes! The credits on the first Trian CD clearly credit Ms. Harris with all three tunes in the set. ("All [composer] Leslie Harris")
Wow! Great costumes! Thanks for the site!
I was just in Sedona a few weeks ago, and there is not a lot of music there, in public anyway, at all. I did meet a guy who runs a mens' clothing shop who said his daughter Leslie plays Irish fiddle in a band (with two CDs!) in Seattle. He couldn't remember the band name and his younger daughter had copped the CDs for a trip out of state.
We did meet a fellow who used to teach violin and ethnomusicology at Indiana Univ of Pennsylvania, and he plays fiddle with a guitar player in a duet called "Dos Geckos". They play all sorts of music, including some nice (altho a tad formal) versions of ITM tunes. Great players! The fiddle player's daughter is a bodhran player in Tucson or somewhere south of Sedona...
Sedona is a very nice place, tho. Lots of potential for more music... A real small town despite its wide reputation as a New Age/vacation spot.
