Post-Catskills Philly TuneFest?

Post-Catskills Philly TuneFest?

Just a random thought as I read through all the posts from those of you lucky enough to get to East Durham this year (can't make it up... AGAIN), thinking, "Gee, how much fun would it be to join in the chunes with these folks?" The thought occured to me that many of you might be headed southward after the festivities, to Baltimore/DC or elsewhere, and perhaps we could plan to meet up at a sesh or two in these parts (check session listings... Bards or Tir na nOg would be lovely). I recall that Danny did this last year. Takers? I know we can count on Andee, grymater, plunkett.mi, bjcomm, jasong and the rest of the Fluffya crew, but it would be smashing to finally get to meet emily, zina et al who seem to make it to the Catskills every year.

OK, release the hounds...

Re: Post-Catskills Philly TuneFest?

Since I'm not going this year, it would be great if this could really happen...

I'd love to see those of you I've met before again, and some--(hey, Zina!)--whom I haven't even met yet!

Re: Post-Catskills Philly TuneFest?

Well - Zeens and I and Jase are heading to NY after the catskills. But Zeens will be in Baltimore for a few days before we go up and conan and I are are flying in on the friday - to be honest I really dont know how its working. All I know is that I am flying in on friday, we will be picked up - ferried to the festival, ferried to NY......
Em, Conan, Jase? Are we going up on the Saturday or the friday night? Me and conan dont get to Baltimore until 7:30pm or something like that......
too confusing - yeah - it'd be great to meet up with all you fellas.

Re: Post-Catskills Philly TuneFest?

BB, I think what you know is basically what I know at this point. I'm completely flexible before the festival obviously. The session on Saturday in Philly isn't til 4, and my understanding is that we really can't check into our hotels in the Catskills until Sunday, so I'd be game to drive up to Philly on Saturday (wouldn't have to leave until noonish-- 2 hour drive from Balmer), bum a place to stay Saturday night (unfortunately my apartment lease is up by then, but something can surely be worked out with my friends in the area), and then head up to the Catskills on Sunday. I know I'll be driving so getting around Philly won't be a problem (after 5 years, I think I've finally figured the place out). Sound like a potential plan?

Re: Post-Catskills Philly TuneFest?

Jase - its 'bb' or 'beebs' or 'bridie' or 'brides' if you dont mind :) God - how did I end up with so many nicknames on this site - so bizarre!

# Posted on June 7th 2005 by bb

Re: Post-Catskills Philly TuneFest?

bb, Bridie, beebs, brides, I went looking for the usual Oz-hijacked session and couldn't find any action - what's going on?

Re: Post-Catskills Philly TuneFest?

I am sooo trying to start fights and everything and there is nobody on at the moment trying to make me calm down, It is very bizarre! Dont know what is going on!

Re: Post-Catskills Philly TuneFest?

Just to clear up a mater of protocol:
When a thread gets hijacked or a little derailed, is it only right and proper to change the header in the subject box or is that too confusing if there isn't a thread by that name on the discussion list page?
To maintain relevance I would just like to say that I am a little peeved that everyone is going to Catskills and I can't go :(

Re: Post-Catskills Philly TuneFest?

bb, don't calm down - things just wouldn't seem right if that happened.
BTW is Katiebee related to you or do you just both happen to be bees.

# Posted on June 7th 2005 by Donough

Re: Post-Catskills Philly TuneFest?

We arent related, but loadsa people have come up to my mother and said 'I heard your daughter sing and she is just wonderful' and My mum is like 'My daughter doesnt sing!' I think Katiebee gets the same too.

Re: Post-Catskills Philly TuneFest?

Sorry Donough. I was too busy fighting entry clearance fights that threaten to scuttle my plans to cross paths with bb in London to hijack any threads today.

Re: Post-Catskills Philly TuneFest?

Jason--if it works out that you do come up to Phila for the Saturday session, you guys can stay at my place if things don't pan out with your friends or if it's just easier to stay in South Phila rather than where your friends are located. I'm literally less than 2 miles from Fergie's. I have no sofa but do have a floor--and one sleeping bag at least....

bb, see how you feel when you get to the states, I would love to meet you. I could come down to Baltimore via train since I don't have a car, but I think Darin has to be at the session up here since he's running it.....

Re: Post-Catskills Philly TuneFest?

Right you are, Andee... I'll need to be here in town during that whole stretch due to a film I'm working on.

I hadn't thought of the weekend before, but a pre-Catskills kickoff at Fergie's (Sat 4-7) sounds like a blast to me. Of course, I wouldn't actually have to go out of my way, so how would that not sound great to me? :-)

Re: Post-Catskills Philly TuneFest?

So, bb if I start off a sentence with your nickname, grammar dictates that the first letter is capitalized, so is it then "Bb"? If I started a sentence with "bb", I would be violating the sacred rules of grammar, and we all know that you don't want to tick off the grammar deities. ;-)

As far as a Saturday session in Baltimore, I would have to check on that. I know there isn't one at J. Patrick's, but I can't recall if anything else has popped up.

Anywho, I'm something can be worked out in the next month or so.

Re: Post-Catskills Philly TuneFest?

Argh. Okay, I was supposed to go up to the Catskills with another friend of mine from Baltimore, but I don't know what his plans are, so it's possible we could both end up in Philly with y'all. Or, Jason, I haven't bought my tix yet (was going to tonight), if you want to stop in Philly on "the way back" from NYC, I could fly out of Philadelphia instead of NYC or Baltimore? Aargh...at this rate, I won't get home til July 30th!

Btw

I've never made it up to the Catskills before! I plead innocence, at least on that count! (SHUT UP, Jack! *smirk*)

Re: Post-Catskills Philly TuneFest?

How delightful to find a discussion at least tangentially related to Irish music in East Durham. I used to go there when I was in my late teens & early 20s. My grandmother always claimed she had gone there as a young girl and from the facilities, I'd be inclined to believe her!

Does anone know how far back some of the places go?

Also, how late in the fall are things still happening there? I plan on coming back East from California for a few weeks in eearly september. The latest I was ever there was July. I'd love to try and get some of my cousins to come up from the City for a visit. east Durham is a good a place as any, maybe better.

Re: Post-Catskills Philly TuneFest?

Zina, were you coming up with Jason and bb? You can stay at my place, too! It's small, but there's plenty of floor space!

Re: Post-Catskills Philly TuneFest?

Yeah Zeens - I thought you were driving up with me, conan, em and Jase? You are too popular - too many peeps wanting to drive you round:)

Re: Post-Catskills Philly TuneFest?

Well, I don't see why I can't make it to Philadelphia at some point. Well, maybe I do, but what's life for if not to live dangerously? Um. Let's see. I'm really not sure what my friend's plans are and we'd kind of left it up in the air as to whether I was going up to E. Durham with him or with the rest of the crew. I'll find out. The other thing I can think of is, is there a train from NYC to Philadelphia? Brides flies out of NYC on the 21st, so i was planning on flying out of there at roughly the same time, but I wonder if it makes much difference if I stay a night or two in Philadelphia and then fly out of there...?

# Posted on June 8th 2005 by Zina Lee

Re: Post-Catskills Philly TuneFest?

Yeah - but zeens, still NY till the 21st right? right?

Re: Post-Catskills Philly TuneFest?

Zina, there's a train right out of 30th Street Station (the main hub in Phila) it's Amtrak to NYC. The cheaper way, but takes longer, is a local Phila train to Trenton, then switch right there to the local New Jersey Transit to NYC.

Not sure what Amtrak costs, it may be worth it just for the convenience of one train and quicker. The local route way is about $15.00 one way. Someone correct me if I'm wron on the cost...

Re: Post-Catskills Philly TuneFest?

You can also take the bus from 11th & Filbert (or the Chinatown bus from 12th & Cherry) for about 12 bucks.... plus you get a movie! EIther bus or non-express train takes about 2 hours and some small change.

Re: Post-Catskills Philly TuneFest?

No worries, Brides -- I'll stay in NYC til you leave! Or at least til we get you to the airport. I'll have to find out when the last train leaves for Philadelphia! And then bother Andee for transport! :) Don't care much about the movie -- by then I'll probably be so sleep-deprived that I'll be practically comatose! Won't that be exciting? :)

# Posted on June 8th 2005 by Zina Lee

Re: Post-Catskills Philly TuneFest?

Ooo, quick news flash, he may be able to come to Philadelphia with us on the way up to E. Durham! So trains and busses maybe be a moot point...
