Well…..they are moving to Portugal (gorgeous sun and red wine…humm) this chaps are staying in my farm house for the moment due to an extensive search for the right spot (it’s being a bit difficult to choose)
They have come up with this limerick’s stuff …. any thoughts?

C’mon C’mon C’mon…..

Re: Limerick contest!!

There once was a couple named Alice
And Mike who were seeking a palace
In the Portugese sun
For flute and pipes uilleann,
But their dream was to breed hogs near Dallas.

Re: Limerick contest!!

There was a young lady called Alice
Who peed in the Vatican Palace
It wasn't the cold
That made her so bold
It was just downright protestant malice.

Re: Limerick contest!!

A couple called Alice and Mike
Went out for a trip on a bike,
They got a flat tyre
But Mike being a trier
Said, "I'll pump up the tyre with my pipes"

Mike and Alice went out in a bus
To the market where he caused quite a fuss,
He saw some old pipes,
When he bought them, said "Cripes
I've been sold a small octopus"

Re: Limerick contest!!

"Alice and Mike, my friends, since you are
"Off to the Iberian Peninsula
"Please tell me, why go?"
"Well, if you must know,
"We don't want to be thought of as insular."

Suas tubulações estiveram poderosas e orgulhosas

His Pipes stood mighty and proud,
As those Rocks Of Bawn he ploughed,
He cried "I'll not starve!"
"I'm off to the Algarve!"
"Where they've never heard of O'Dowd"

Re: Limerick contest!!

What about this one:

Mike 18 years ago have came to Portugal for the first time and fell in love for this girl in a party she gave him her address and Mike promised to came back to visit her…

Next year he came with 2 friends and they did it by bicycle all over Europe to see her…
When they got finally to Portugal Mike discovered he forgot the paper with the girl’s address back in Sherwood…that’s a nice one!!

Tubulaçãoes ???

God, Pitnekit, get a grip!
Everyone knows that Tubulaçãoes is Portuguese for Pipes!
Tubul = pipelike
açãoes = various squeezy bits and the odd lever

Re: Limerick contest!!

Sorry Ottery....you aren't correct.
Portuguese Word for pipes is - Gaita de foles!

Re: Limerick contest!!

Well Ottery " I say Banana.....and..

This is just a linguistic problem…

# Posted on May 25th 2005 by pitnekit

Re: Limerick contest!!

Pitnekit, sorry, I was only joking, the word 'Tubulaçãoes' came from a Babelfish translation from 'pipes' - I haven't a clue what it really means(!)
It sure is a linguistic problem!

Re: Limerick contest!!

A stubborn old Yankee named Donovan
Depised all Micks and made fun of 'em,
'Til one day he came
To researching his name
And finally found out he was one of 'em.

Re: Limerick contest!!

( Writen whilst wearing a "Nantucket" sweatshirt ).....

There once was a man from Nantucket
Who kept all his cash in a bucket
But his daughter, named Nan
Ran away with a man
And as for the bucket, Nan tuck it.

And yes, I do know the rude one, but it don't apply !

Re: Limerick contest!!

Do you have to qualify in the Regionals before you can get through to the Finals ?

I've heard the judges can be bribed also......

Re: Limerick contest!!

Perhaps we could also discuss whether:

a) it helps you make better limericks if you are irish

b) what is the correct way to write a limerick

c) whether limericks can be learned by ear, or whether it is better to learn them from the written version

d) which is the correct version of "There once was a man from Nantucket"

*****post event irony alert******

Re: Limerick contest!!

define "correct"

Re: Limerick contest!!

I thought it had to be about Alice & Mike? If we're just comparing Limericks, here's my all-time favourite:

There was a young lady of Thrace
Whose corsets grew too tight to lace.
Her mother said "Nellie,
"There's more in your belly
"Than ever went in through your face!"

Hi Pitnekit,
I just heard your tunes on The Mighty Craic, and I'm mighty impressed - very nice!

Re: Limerick contest!!

Marco (pitnekit) - I know Mike and Alice. Furthermore, I'm going to be spending some time in Portugal (I don't know whereabouts yet) from about September of this year. It would be nice for the two of us, if not all of us, to meet up for some tunes.

Re: Limerick contest!!

P.S. I heard your fiddle playing on The Mighty Craic too - I look forward to hearing it 'in the flesh'.
