The dotted line has just been signed upon this morning ... I'll be working in London starting as close to June 22 as flights will allow, and will be there till July 22 or later, depending on how the job goes and whether they find other work for me to do.
I'm not asking about sessions here - I swear!!! - as I'm looking into that separately but I'm wondering whether any of you are playing gigs, and/or can recommend any gigs, CD shops you know to be particularly good for trad (Sydney's better than it was but it's still not brilliant) and any other trad- or fiddle-related Must-Dos (or Must-Avoids!) in the general area.
Producing a technical documentation pack for an aircraft communications test/simulation rig, then (perhaps) doing other related jobs on the same project. General low-level systems engineering stuff.
Seriously though, no worries Tish. We'll make sure you get plenty of music. Loads of sessions over here at the moment, and some good music shops - HMV and Virgin have a decent selection. I'll be around for a week at the start and end of your stay so you'll be introduced to the crowd over here. The Hammersmith Irish Centre usually has a good gig every weekend and there are festivals you might want to catch too. You'll have a great time.
Thanks muchly Conan, Danny - I'll send you my e-mail address and will check out that link.
Thanks Brian, got your e-mails this morning, will reply properly over the weekend.
I've got the usual agenda of museums, galleries, etc, but most of that can only be done on the weekends during the day and I should have plenty of free evenings.
Maybe I can buy "in person" that CD of Nell's I've been meaning to get round to buying!
Oh, and some gents from the Kilkenny Arms session on Tuesdays have also been in touch - I'll be working pretty close to Wimbledon but have no idea where I'll be staying yet.
I meant to also say that I read Tish's earlier post quickly, and what I saw said "during the day I should have plenty of free evenings". I missed the "and" between "day" and "I". I did a complete double-take. But I think it is a great line. It reminds me of a Burns and Allen routine. Really, I'm not being a smart-ass.
The Australian Government Style Manual does not require a comma after "day", though an editor would be free to substitute "so" for "and" at their discretion, for greater clarity.
Well have to make sure we all get together for a session.
Conan, Nell, Danny, me et al (although Al has been absent a bit recently).
My band is playing at Camden (Irish Centre) on July 8th but I will be absent as I'm flying out to Toulouse for a cycle race in France that day. So the gig should be even better (before anyone else says it)
Yeah, of course. A meeting of Thesession.org London And South East England Chapter is long overdue anyway. What about our previous meeting place, The Crown and Cushion , Westminster Bridge Road, SE1, whenever?
Yeah - we should totally have a thesession session. Sounds great! I think I'll only be around for 3 days while Tish is there (then I'm off to Ireland, America, Canada and Europe...phew) The dates I'm in London first off will be the 22nd to the 25thish of June...sound doable for anyone?
Well, I missed your visit last year, beebs, so we must get something sorted out this time. But I have to tell you, wee Fergus (now 2 & a half), needs 110% supervision so keep us posted by email.
Geoff - what a shame you're not playing! Will put the gig in my diary, anyway.
bb et al, re thesession get-together: I start work on Jun 22 and don't have any fixed things yet till 3pm June 26, so if there's a time in there that works out for bb and everyone else, I'd love to be in it. Would prefer an early-ish start (I guess I'll still be a bit tired and I have to make a good impression at work in the first few days!) but then most of you people have work the next day as well. There's a chance my stay will be extended to about when bb gets back to London but that's iffy, so it would be great to catch up then if possible.
It IS weird, given the amount of jet-setting I do Yes, Fri 24 or Sat 25 look good, if that fits in with your flying-out-again plans and what everyone else is doing.
Bummer Beebs, we're not going to cross paths in London after all.
My entry clearance has been delayed by a totally unnecessary and time-wasting hold up at the far end and now I'll be arriving somewhere between Jun 28 and July 4.
I'll miss your gig on the 26th, Geoff, but am still hoping to cross paths with some of you good folk. Will be in touch by email when I have a new departure date.
<...he melts my head >
I can't help wondering what a melted head looks like. I can't help thinking of chocolate but you're the wrong colour. Wouldn't it do terrible things to the fiddle chin-rest.
Hi bb, Conan, Nell, Geoff, Danny, anybody out there? Have been Internet-less since I got here and am on a friend's PC for a moment. My profile email is now my new work one, but I don't have Internet access at work so if you write to me, include your address so I can write back. Made it to the Kilkenny Tavern last night (arriving late, a long story but I got there) and am hoping to catch a few more sessions soon. Looks like I'll be around till about Aug 20. bb, Sir Nose, hope it's all going well for you and hope to catch up soon.
Hello? Anyone out there? Or did I get pushed off the page in that vigorous debate going on when I was last here?
Poked my nose into a little session at Captain Morgan's in Brentford/Kew Bridge last night as I'm right next door. Didn't look like a come-and-join-in session so I listened from a distance. Was supposed to be somewhere else but abandoned that plan due to all the traffic closures.
In haste, hoping to catch up with some of you soon.

She's the one doing the head-melting but I will do my level best to turn the tables and melt her into a mouthless Burke Sundae.

Re: An Australian in London
Maybe you could accidentally on purpose weld her chin onto her shoulder so she can't torture me anymore with her fiddle.

Re: An Australian in London
She'd only learn to play it with her size 8s, out of spite.
The only solution is a variation on an idea I saw in a film: Boxing Bridie, anyone?
