When i hear a Bb set- I get the itchys to play- but a soon to be Bb whistle should curb things. Seriously- I really love the sound of flat pitched pipes and they almost play them selves, well, almost... I'd like a C or a B/Bb from a good maker one of these years.
Bb just has that wonderful, sonorous sound to it. Doesn't work for everything mind you. I love 'em for slower tunes. Casey Burns is coming out with a Bnat. flute too, I might get one of those someday rather than a Bb. I like to play with pipers and B sets seem to be more popular than Bb. Perhaps I can talk Casey into doing a C flute too. My piper friend has a C half set, but no B. Now I just play the C whistle or tune my fiddle down if he breaks out his C set.
Anyone for Low flute? (A, Bb)
Anyone for Low flute? (A, Bb)
Why the heck are low Bb flutes more popular than low A? It seems that in a D session, the low A would be much more useful.
Tell me about your 'alto' simple-system flute. Who made it and what you like about it.

Listen to Claire Mann play the Michael Grinter Bb on her latest album, Secret Orders, with Aaron Jones to see why.

Any plug for Claire is OK by me but her flutes are both by Chris Wilkes

Re: Anyone for Low flute? (A, Bb)
I made it. I like it because it allows me to play in D in the secondary key, which I often prefer to do over playing in the fundamental key.
And, of course, A and Bm are a snap.

I stand corrected
I was thinking of Brendy Mulholland who has a concert Grinter - mixed up in my mind because I had a session with them both last year at Girvan!
Jaysus that drink is really addling my brain!

Re: Anyone for Low flute? (A, Bb)
It is not always the key but that tone of that particular key A may be more useful but generally people prefer the sound of a Bb Flute.

I bet Terry McGee would make you a C flute or a B depending on your preferences. . .
