ABC Navigator query

ABC Navigator query

Hi all -- I'm new here, and new to the ABC format. I just downloaded ABC Navigator 2 and am mystified as how to use it. The Help button does not do anything.

How do I get a tune to play so I can hear it? The window says No Tune, and I can't figure out how to get it in there.

Where can I find a user's manual for ABC Navigator?

TIA,
Michael

Re: ABC Navigator query

http://www.gre.ac.uk/~c.walshaw/abc/

is THE help page - you can find a link to it in the Links section here, under the category "ABC Software".
You won't get far until you've read this.
Once you've read through it, go to the Tunes section here and add a few tunes to your tunebook. Then download your tunebook onto your computer. When you've downloaded it, open it, and ABC navigator should open it up for you. The most confusing thing I found was that you have to click on the middle "Edit" icon to amend the ABC text. But my version of Navigator came with a whole bunch of tunes, built in, apparently.

Re: ABC Navigator query

If you double click on the "Key" field on your tune listing, the tune will start to play. Also if you edit the ABC, and then hit the "play" icon, the tune will play. Navigator does leave your last edited tune in memory, though, so you can be browsing through your other tunes and hit play, and think "That sounds just like the other one..." but it still IS the other one. Geek approach is to hit every button & click every icon. Don't forget right-click & double click.

Re: ABC Navigator query

Thanks IB, that helps a lot. Still wondering why the Help button is non-functional...

Re: ABC Navigator query

It took me a while to get this program to work. To create a new tune I had to do the following
File->New Tune then ABCTune->New Tune then I could paste the ABC info in and click OK. Then I could play and save the file.
To open an already saved file I had to File->Open then ABCTune->Edit and hit the play button (like IB said above)
It's a bit difficult to use but it's worth persisting with because it's free and the variable speed function is useful and it's seems to cope well with ornamentation

Re: ABC Navigator query

Yes, but it was pointed out to the ABCNav boffs when the albeit freeware was first highlighted on The Session. (We had to point it out on the Session as no email contact can be found).

It is about time they got around to tidying up a very nice looking module. People might start using it more!! Hint!!

Has anyone got a contact email?

Re: ABC Navigator query

In fact, anyone fancy writing a short ABCNav tour of what it can do - don't tell us it is on the website, it is obvious from comments elsewhere that people like the look but cannot figure out how to use it.

Re: ABC Navigator query

I was told it wasn't rocket science, now it seems that it is even harder.

Thank God I stuck to my principles instead of making a fool of myself.

But it is nice to know that it is gobble-le-gook.
