What is an Anorak?

What is an Anorak?

*ahem* I was recently referred to as an "anorak" in the tunes section and I wondered what it meant. My Google search revealed some disturbing results:

Anorak, a term of abuse

A.no.rak noun. [Esk. (Greenland) anoraq] a heavy jacket with a hood.

In the UK this form of coat was worn by all children in the 1970s, but worn now only by socially disfunctional adults who still wear the trousers they wore to school (despite the fact they never covered their ankles even back when they were 14 years old).

also

Train.spo.tting verb. [UK] the activity of recording with pen and paper, the serial numbers from the side of railway locomotives.

Trainspotting was a common childhood pursuit of British children in the post-war period, it comes under that category of hobbies that involve collecting. It is possible to buy books listing the serial numbers of all the railway rolling stock in the country and then check off each one as it is seen. Adults who practice this activity are naturally seen as dull, and immature, because the majority of people find other pursuits more attractive once they have passed the legal age for sex and alcohol.

These two phenomena in British society have given rise to a new use for the term 'anorak' (an article of clothing often worn by 'trainspotters') to mean any dull individual, or someone with a boring hobby. Hence I could be described as a Stone Circle ANORAK.

Re: What is an Anorak?

If you look in the L.L. Bean clothing catalog, an anorak is a nylon jacket with a hood doesn't zip all the way up the front, so you have to pull it on over your head. Seems to have been more popular a few years ago, has kind of a hippy look to it. All these other meanings are new to me!

Re: What is an Anorak?

I guess you could say there are diferent breeds of anorak such as a "Modal Anorak" - don't take much to work that one out.
Anyway I'm familiar with this term but it doesn't get used in my part of the world (oz) because no-one wears anoraks here.
I suppose we are all essentially Session/Tune Anoraks by virtue of our being here!

Re: What is an Anorak?

So, sticks and stones will break my bones but words will.......... confuse me? For what its worth, I don't think of you as a dull person with a boring (ITM?) hobby.... or a nylon jacket for that matter.

Do you feel more like an ol hulk of a shipwreck? Just trying to help. ;-)

Re: What is an Anorak?

I always assumed anorak was an international slang term. Didn't realise it wasn't used in America. I had an anorak which was green red and blue when I was at school in the 80s and I think there are a couple of photos of me in it at my mum's house *cringe*. I also had a parka with elastic in the sleeves and waist. I got it off my older brother who got it off my mum. It was brown and orange and stripey. I also had one of those coats that everyone wore for school in the winter - what were they called? They always had orange quilting inside the hood and a line of fake fur round the hood edge. They were usually navy blue but I think my brother had a brown one which was really good if you were playing star wars and wanted to be a jawa, but it was too big for me because my brother reached 6'3" when he was about 13.

Re: What is an Anorak?

Dow
I think those coats are called "coats having fur-trimmed hoods lined with orange quilt", or chfthlwoq—pronounced chuf-thloks.

# Posted on April 29th 2005 by

Re: What is an Anorak?

LOL! I think it was the coat itself that was completely lined with bright orange nylon quilting, and the hood had some sort of cheapy fleece stuff inside it. Ahhh I'm feeling all nostalgic thinking about my old coats. I think I gave them away to charity so some homeless person is probably wearing them now. I bet they come back into fashion in the next 5 years or so, the chfthlwoqs I mean.

Re: What is an Anorak?

"Didn't realise it wasn't used in America."

It is American. To be more specific it is Inuit. It is traditionally made of seal skin, but that's a bit frowned upon these days.

It is simply a pullover outer garment with a hood. The Inuit prefer pullovers because of the climate they live in. A pullover is inherently warmer and more secure than a button or zipper front and can easily be put on or taken off without removing your mittens, which are in turn inherently warmer than gloves.

What do you call someone who refuses to eat until they're able to check off the final entry in their last railway rolling stock book?

"As a slang term I meant."

Ah. No. I've never heard it used as meaning anything other than the garment over here.

Re: What is an Anorak?

I read that Americans (US, not eskimos!) wore parkas but not anoraks, when parkas and anoraks were popular in the UK. Is this true? I think I'm becoming an anorak anorak. Is there such a thing?

# Posted on April 29th 2005 by Dr. Dow

Re: What is an Anorak?

Anoraks have always been a minority choice here. You can go across huge swaths of the country and never see one. They're most popluar on the northern coasts, with mountaineers (wind seems to find it's way through any type of fastener, baffled or not) and other "woodsy" type people, hence their inclusion in the L.L. Bean catalog.

On the other hand the hooded sweatshirt, or "hoody", is quite popular, and is really nothing more than a mild weather anorak.

Re: What is an Anorak?

An "anorak" is a derogatory term for any person who has an obsessive interest in some subject or hobby etc which is considered to be boring to the general population. This would include such things as train spotting, bird watching, stamp collecting etc. And yes, also an obsessive interest in tunes and the like so it *would* include many people on this site.

It has the claimed that the use of the term originated due to supporters and enthusiasts of "pirate radio stations" in the late sixties/seventies who would come to visit or view the ships and be wearing anoraks. At least, this is what they claim on web sites and books relating to the history of "pirate radio". So, maybe, I could be accused of this myself for reading the damned things!
This is a highly probable explanation but, generally, most people equate "anarok"="boring" . Roy Cropper in Coronatin Street is a typical anorak.

Re the clothing itself. Other forms of jacket or waterproof tops which are made of synthetic material are often referred to as anoraks but they are not the genuine article. This would include some very trendy garments but you'll know the real thing when you see it. :-)

I'm an anorak? :-(

Re: What is an Anorak?

Be proud !

It's not always derogatory Jack, it's often used in a musical taste definition to define people who have a very keen interest in music that isn't in the top 30 pop charts.

If you don't like Take That then you'll probably be described as an anorak by those who haven't heard of the Bothy Band.

Re: What is an Anorak?

I remember early days at a session, before joining, I'd ask the name of any time I liked, made a note. I felt a bit like a train spotted, but then went home and learned the tuned. I think an anorak would have just collected the info for its own sake.
Without being anal, I knew this was an exclusively British term of abuse, where there is a habit of categorising everybody. If you ike traditional music, you're a folkie and assumed to have beard, wear Arran jumpers and live in a coutry cottage with wooden furniture. If you're a member of MENSA, you're a stamp collecting 35 year old virgin bloke, still living at his mum's, etc, etc. The Guinness Book of Records is the anorak's official publication :-)

Re: What is an Anorak?

Hahahaha... right

Sorry, I was away after hearing a huge car wreck outside. After a fender bender, someone tried to escape before the exchange of insurance papers and such. A chase ensued and the one trying to get away was plastered. They crashed into three parked cars -- what a mess. Luckily no one was hurt. The drunk driver will have a hell of a hang-over tomorrow in jail.

Re: What is an Anorak?

Jack - mellow out. Stop being paranoid. We could all be classed as anoraks/geeks etc., but we know we're not. Although used in UK as a term of abuse it is generally done so kindly and lightheartedly....in fact maybe salightly jealously, ie in our context, X may be considered a "real tune anorak" because he knows 10x more tunes than the rest of us!

Re: What is an Anorak?

Stereotypes apart, the anoraks that I know have recordings by the thousand, all on cassette or even reel-to-reel, all indexed, but none converted onto digital.
They are often CAMRA members (real ale) as well as members of model-trains and transport societies (spotters).
Some of them even refuse to go on booze-cruises across to Belguim, because it is "full of foreigners", even though the beer is the best in the world.

Singing spotters are the worst - they have to give you the 10 minute collection history of the song before they start its 40 verses.

# Posted on April 29th 2005 by geoffwright

Re: What is an Anorak?

That reminds me!!!! I've been asked to get musicians together for this year's CAMRA beer festival in Catford - So, Aidan, Sheila, Danny, Max, Billy, this means you. 10th June.
We did it last year and only drank the cider because we can't stand ales - the cider was a lot stronger than we realised and more than 3 pints turned out to be deadly

Re: What is an Anorak?

Jack: you need to stop worrying about it and get a T-Shirt made: "Kiss my Anorak Butt" with a cartoon of an Eskimo providing a bare ass. Or if you want to privately chortle at others, say it in Gaelic. (^:

Re: What is an Anorak?

Are you trying to shame me, Jack? I'm quite capable of doing that on my own thankyou. Being dressed as a lady is an immensely liberating experience I'll have you know. Apart from the fact that you're challenging the social constructs of everyday life, it also allows you to ventilate yourself in such a way that would be impossible if you were wearing, say, jeans. I don't suppose that making wafting movements with your skirt is particularly lady-like though. I guess practice makes perfect. I'm off to play with my kitten now, bye.

Google suggests maybe you mean "ragnarok." It does sound Norse. Or a bad guy from HG Wells or Star Trek? Some of the hits related to online gaming I think.
An anagram for "anarok jack gilder" is "OAKLAND CIGAR JERK." Maybe a good 'un if you smoke! Or "CAJOLING DARK RAKE" if you want something less ostensibly insulting.

Re: What is an Anorak?

You can't wear an anorak in Kununurra Danny.

In Australia, such people are known as "tragics".
As in "I'm a session tragic" - although it speaks more of doomed obsession than obsessive fact collecting.

When I first got to Scotland I was asked if I had a kagul. Or if I not had a kagul, as in "Do you not have a kagul (you f@€king stupid antipodean)?" Last bit was unspoken but perfectly clear.
I got one to wear at an open air concert, so then I did not not have a kagul.
You don't hear about kaguls anymore - did anoraks take over?
