Grey Paolo Soprani Boxes

Grey Paolo Soprani Boxes

What is it with the "old" grey paolo's?!! I've been searching the country left, right and centre but i cant seen to get my hands on one. Im looking for a dark grey one, preferably a three voice, so if you know of one let me know, your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Re: Grey Paolo Soprani Boxes

Welcome to the club! These gravel crusher boxes are extremely hard to come by and even if you could get one it would cost in the $3000- $4000 range. It seems they were such great boxes, fiddle players everywhere bought them up and buried them deep in the bogs all over Ireland, to preserve them of course. Good Luck searching although I think the Holy Grail and Ark of the Covenant would probably be easier.
All The Best!

Sean Garvey in crumlin has started to import grey paolo soprani's from Italy. Due to the huge demand for the boxes, a small workshop employing former Paolo Soprani workers (think paolo soprani company no longer exists in the same form or something.... i'm open to correction on this) has been set up in northern Italy to specifically build replicas of the old 1950's grey paolo. They're coming to him at the rate of three or four a month and he sells them on to the general public. They are absolutely identical to the 1950's box in tone, appearance etc. I recently paid him a visit myself and was extrememly impressed. Not sure how much of a waiting list there is for them at the moment.....

Re: Grey Paolo Soprani Boxes

If you are in the states, Jim Coogan is the rep for the new old Paolo boxes. There are a few slight differences from the old box, most noteably is the wooden soundboard has been upgraded to aluminum. This solves the warping problem which killed a lot of these boxes in Ireland's damp climate.

Re: Grey Paolo Soprani Boxes

I've just got one of these in for an overhaul, and then it will be for sale. Its tuned D/D#. Do people still play this tuning? I could reprofile the reeds to C#/D while I have it apart. What should I do? What would make it most useful/saleable?

Re: Grey Paolo Soprani Boxes

Hi, have you ever come across a 5 coupler grey 1950' box with
2 bass couplers (23 button treble 8 bass buttons). Do you know if they were rated as good as the two coupler grey.

Regards,

Tom.

Re: Grey Paolo Soprani Boxes

yes, i currently own a 5 coupler its in immaculate condition, but they are very heavy and i wouldnt think they are rated as highly as the 3 and 4 voice greys, they are probably more harder to come across though. if you ever come across a 3 or 4 voice please get in contact. Thank you!!!
