Close your eyes and you would have thought you were somewhere else ...WHY?
I was sat in Flemings Bar 2 Rue De La Loge, Lyon ( just up the street from a bar called SOLAS ?? ) and when I closed my eyes and listened to the music I coudl have been ...anywhere than France.
.....i suppose i should have thought that when i shut my eyes i should think of Ireland ...but i didnt, i first thought of my last good session; ... in Barcelona and the one before in Paris ..and previous to that was Vancouver and those incredible nights in Chicago ?? WHY ....why should i think of these session before the ones at 'Home' in the south east of ireland ??
for the past 2 years I have been travelling with bands and being paid as a 'session' musician and have discovered an amazing resource of vibrant and 'fresh' music played outside of those 4 green fields,
why does Irish music seem more FRESH VIBRANT IMAGINATIVE INNOVATIVE & INTERESTING outside of this island of Ireland nowadays.
*** this opinion is from travelling constantly for the past few years and my opinion is only 'my opinion' and this is only a question ..not a statement of indiffereance to those thousands of musicians in Ireland who remain interesting. ......it just seems that there is so much good music outside of Ireland that get little press ..and maybe Ireland should listen***
Actually, that pretty much is what it's known as in New England.
To take the question somewhat seriously, for the same reason that many people believe that mutts are more intelligent and healthier than pure breds.
A bit of new genetic material now and again only improves things overall.
Which, as it happens, is how we ended up with "Irish" music in the first place. It started out, and not too long ago as these things go, as a mutt, even if there are those now creating a registered breed out of it.
Actually, Zina, the way I hear it is Albert read her the riot act for coming to his room too often. She must have been advising someone more, er, reserved... ;)
Jack: Just testing. Got your eyes open again?
DefGoat: It seems to me that you are externalizing a personal perspective. It then becomes simply the way things are for everyone. There are other perspectives. I am happy for you that you are connected with ITM outside of Ireland. There are others (whom I will not mention here) that actually visit sessions in Ireland that find it alive and doing very well and end up on the radio with a excellent selection of music generated out of Ireland. Different strokes for different Blokes, -er Folks.

Re: close your eyes..
ROTFLMAO! You could do it, too, KFG.
Deffgoat, now all day I'm going to have wandering through my mind the phrase "Close your eyes and think of Ireland".

Oh gosh, I was going to write you back on this, Sara, but I think we're treading on shakey ground, family-site wise here. *smirk*
