Chcago this weekend?

Chcago this weekend?

I am going to a conference in Chicago at the end of the week and will have some time Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, nights. I am looking for suggestions about where to go to find good ITRAD (no unicorn music) either in a session or in performance. Any suggestions as to whats on will be most appreciated!

( I play whistle at what I think is advanced beginner/intermediate level --- I know some tunes :) I am comfortable particpating in slow sessions and listening to full speed sessions as a punter. I enjoy listening to sessions or pub performances a lot even more than I like going to hear the big names in concert. )

Thanks!

JB

Re: Chcago this weekend?

Use the search function for chicago sessions?? Where in the city are you?? There's a bunch going on. I "listened in" on a session at the Hidden Shamrock on Sunday last year-see my post ; so it may not be the right timing. Knew the piper and fiddle player...

I wanna go too!!! are we there yet!!!

Chulrua is playing at the Irish Heritage Center on April 2. Here's a good link for Chicago events:

I thought that Chief O'Neill's had music, but the music calendar on their website is blank. Maybe worth a call.

Re: Chicago this weekend?

Bad timing, John. All of the sessions that I know of in Chicago fall on the days you won't be there, usually on Sunday, Monday, or Wednesday. And it's too bad your conference isn't scheduled for next weekend, since Altan and Liz Carroll and Jonh Doyle will be in town on the 9th, playing at the Old Town School of Folk Music.

But it might be worth your while to check out what the Old Town School has planned for this weekend anyway. While not ITM, there'll be some "First Friday" events going on this Friday and a Jimmie Dale Gimore concert on Saturday. There's also a really good music store right there in the school, and best of all, there's a nice little Irish pub called The Grafton only two doors down from the school. Here's a link to the school's website:

Otherwise, Jode's suggestion--Chulrua--might be your best bet. I've seen Chulrua perform--they're pretty good. Don't know if you know Chicago, but both the Old Town School and the Irish American Heritage Center (IAHC) are on the north side. Old Town School is in Lincoln Square at 4544 N. Lincoln (near Lincoln and Wilson) and the IAHC is a little further west, at 4646 N. Knox (link below). Have a great time--I wish I could go home for a visit myself!

Re: Chcago this weekend?

Everyone has been really helpful. I think I am going to end up at Chief Oneills on Friday night where the SPRIGS are supposed to be playing and at the IAHC on Saturday evening.

The Old Town School and the Grafton might be a Thursday evening trip.

I will let you all know how things went next week. ! :)
