Tell me more. Has anyone every contributed to one of these things? How were the profits divided? Was it a nightmare? I want to know everything there is to know about producing a compilation disc. Ready, and, GO!
The only compilations I have been on have been for charity, so that took care of the dividing profits problem. It's good PR for all the bands involved, and may give people decent exposure.
If you are looking to turn a profit yourself, you might think about paying a set amount for each track and forget about profit sharing. Or, you could pay a set rate for a certain number of CDs in production?
I'm not doing it to make as much money as possible for myself. I want to raise funds to put on increasingly larger mini-festivals while at the same time giving more to the artists than they would get from a record company. I want the shows to eventually be successful enough so I can quit my job and pay myself a salary, but that's as far as it goes.
The full-timers I know rely almost entirely on CD sales to make the profit from their shows worthwhile. It's true I also know lots of folks with boxes of unsold albums mouldering away in their attics, but I've made the observation that the common thread with these musicians is they spent way too much money on production, they rushed through the process to save money on studio time (resulting in a shabby product), and they don't hustle. After they get their box, they expect the discs to magically disappear from the box and money to start appearing where the CDs used to be. I think I can avoid these pitfalls by A) doing everything but the printing / copying for free, and B) hustling my ass off.
Yeah, profits? Oh, you mean *attempts* to break even. Kerri, the "Wooden Flute Obsession" CDs run close to that as a charitable CD with donated tracks, some of our own recording costs, mastering, artwork, printing & replication. Don't forget there are also possible mechanical royalties. If you'd like to discuss in detail, either call me or email me for specifics. Re: CD compilations
Ask Helen Roche!

One of her tracks has been selected for the Rough Guide to Irish Music (2) Some achievement for a debut CD.
I think generally speaking it's the record companies who put these together rather than the artists themselves.

Re: CD compilations
So the question is, if anyone here has been asked to contribute to a compilation on a label, what was the deal they offered you?
