St. Louis Tionol April 8-10 - It's almost here!

St. Louis Tionol April 8-10 - It's almost here!

I can't wait! This will be my first time there and from all I hear it should be excellent. I'm signed up for my first Tommy Peoples workshop. The lineup for the Saturday night concert is phenominal. And non-stop sessions from Friday thru Sunday night!

Any advice or pointers from past attendees? Are many from here planning on going this year?

Be warned that Tommy is not incredibly talkative, being a shy and modest man. But don't let that put you off. Use your ears and absorb the notes and style. Don't let your need for an explanation rob you of the opportunity to hear the answers. What you hear and learn will pay off over the long run.

Ask Tommy questions when you have them, and, for god's sake, be sure to be willing to play in front of him. He's a lovely but very very shy man, and he just can't cope with a room full of people who refuse to play in front of him when he's trying to teach them!

Sorry, I didn't mean to suggest that you shouldn't ask questions! But don't expect long rambling speeches and in depth analysis either. I have just heard others express frustration with his classes because they expect detailed explanations of technique and such.

Didn't mean to make that sound pointed, Jode, I hadn't seen your post when I posted! :)

Oh, and FMT, the other thing is, try to sit as close to him as you can. Tommy doesn't talk very loudly. Also, that way you can watch for the famous finger non-flick on the scratchy triplets. That's the one time Tommy's voice actually raised above the level of a whisper - when he was saying that he does NOT flick his pinky onto the bow during his triplets. (He doesn't, I watched specially for that, it just looks like he does.)

Tommy is quite willing to let his playing speak for him, though, so be sure your recording gear is all up to scratch, and have a notepad ready so you can jot down notes about what you see him doing. I learned a great deal from watching and listening to him.

Yes, I'm going. This will be my 3rd year; it's always a great time. Perhaps people who lurk about thesession.org should create some sort of secret signal so we can recognize each other at the sessions.

Any suggestions for a secret signal?

That would be the bright yellow t-shirt with the The Session.org logo on it...it's available from the link on the home page. :)

Hey, I'm going too, along with local ceili dance teacher Christine Harker. I've been there the past two years and look forward to it. I'll be the bearded guy with the Zoukfest T-shirt.

Ok. I'll be wearing a Chiff and Fipple t-shirt. No beard. Thinning hair (Dammit). I play guitar and whistle.

I'll probably have on a shirt that says "Look out he's got a banjo" on it <G>
