Hmmmmm- the hottie bit isn't applicable being female myself but I saw her live a couple of years ago and found her technically brilliant but lacking warmth and spirit. Was it a bad day or muscial DNA?
I have been a Liz Carroll fan since her Trian album ( I believe she was with Paddy O'Brien on accordian and Daitha Sproule on guitar). Gosh, that was more than a decade ago. I wish she would still do some trio work. Then there was a middle period of work with larger groups. In more recent (Solas sponsored) work and chemistry with John Doyle, her music has been exceptionally good. An example is her award winning "Lake Effect." She did the music for an excellent documentary about the Irish immigration to America, including a gorgeous slow tune, "First Generation Lament." For those that have not heard her recently, you might want to check out her last two CDs.
Gosh, we agree on something: her fiddle playing. She is a nice lady that would have a good laugh about your comment. I hope you know she is old enough to be your mama. I think her husband might have something to say about your proposal.
Trian was with Billy McComiskey on box, not Paddy O'Brien. Their first album is fantastic--it's great to hear her play it straight and blend with the accordion.
Just saw Liz Carroll in Oslo (with Mairead from Altan, Liz Knowles, Annbjørg Lien, Catriona McDonald and Emma Härdelin) last Sunday. What a truly great fiddleplayer. *sigh*
Was this a "String Sisters" concert, Snorre?
Catriona organised something similar at Celtic Connections a few years ago. It was a brilliant concert. I'm glad they're still all doing things together.
Liz is the best. I have heard her called "the best female Irish fiddler," but I would remove the female, and say she is the best, period. She has the ability to both play it straight in the tradition, and push the edges of the envelope. And if you ever get a chance to meet her, you will find she is a heck of a nice person, too.
I just found the Trian II album at the Green Linnet web site. Thank you for the info on Trian I tedium. No one has mentioned Liz Carroll the composer. You listen to pieces that sound like vintage ITM, then check the credits and get surprised about how much she composes herself. Best Wishes.
The excellence of this trio cannot be understated. I went to two of their concerts on two successive nights and they barely played any of the same music. And both concerts were brilliant. In fact, I have reason to believe that they made the sets up as they drove in the car between gigs, daedling to each other. Maybe they will play together again some day!
I am so old that I saw/heard her win the adult fiddle at the Fleadh in Buncranna in 19....no, I can't say it as it makes me even older....but she was only 18 then.
I musy go and listen again.
Wow, Trian II is now listed as "temporarily out of stock" at the GL website--maybe there was a rash of orders after you mentioned it, CeolCairdeas! I'll have to check back and see if I can get it later, since I still haven't heard that one.
Just checked Amazon, and the minimum used price on Trian II is $37.17--yow! The first album is available at sane prices, however.
No, the reason for the price difference is evident in the labels. Trian is in print and on Flying Fish records. No problem there. Trian II was published by the now-troubled Green Linne. Check almost any other of their releases and you'll see the same. They liquidated most of their stock and so private owners are hiking up the prices in the used market. I've seen prices as high as $80 for some other titles. Do a search on Green Linnet on thesession and you'll find more info on the situation.
Just got my Trian I out again. Tedium : I hope I'm not causing a rush to purchase these excellent trio CDs. However, its fantastic material. Maybe if there is enough demand, they will run more CDs onto the market.
At least what I see in 2005 is very few opportunities to hear quality trio ITM. Maybe with the current level of technology, we can reduce the risk of losing older albums forever by creating some type of archive. Best Wishes.
Hey Guernsey Pete, I was in Buncrana too. She was on top form that day, there was no way anyone else was going to win it. Beautiful, powerful spirited playing
Liz Carroll is a goddess. I just saw her play with John Doyle, Karan Casey, and Eamonn Coyne in Somerville (Mass.) on Thursday night (St. Patrick's Day). I'm from Chicago originally--also Liz's hometown--and I'm trying to get a petition started to rename the city after her. Or at least the south side.

Chillin,
There's a CD she did along with Ian Lowthian called "Opus Blue". One of the tunes is called "Up da strouds da sailor goes". Could this be it?

BTW, Trian's first album can be bought in electronic form via Apple's iTunes music store.
I just submitted my transcription of the reel Deirdre Shannon's from that album, which I had to learn after I heard it.

I did meet her once, at a party about 25 years ago. Yeah, she's a nice person. Her Patrick is the same age as my Patrick.
