Found a nice qoute thought I'd pass along to me fellow fiddlers. I figure Mr. Twain would be including Jig's, hornpipes, etc.

"We consider that any man who can fiddle all through one of those Virginia Reels without losing his grip, may be depended upon in any kind of musical emergency."
-- Mark Twain

Re: Quote

Does that only apply to fiddlers? Despite my relatively broad-based musical background, and relatively late introduction to ITM (as compared to, say, somebody raised in the musical traditions of the West of Ireland), put me in any musical situation other than a trad session and I can do little more than pluck a few notes which are more or less in tune.

Re: Quote

Another great Mark Twain quote I found, Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that. But the realy great make you feel that you, too, can become great.

I figure it could apply to others than fiddlers.

Re: Quote

I've discovered that most American old time traditional music styles are from Traditional Irish Music. In fact, a lot of it's the same tunes, just different names. You'd probably be able to pluck more than a few notes.

Lessen of course the musical situation is some sort of bizzar rock and roll thingy bobber or such.

Re: Quote

There is a great Irish tune that Mike Dugger taught me that he called the Virginia reel. It's known by another name, but I can't recall it at this moment.

Re: Quote

I don't know if this is a spurious quote but Noel Coward, on hearing the Irish pipes was heard to say 'thank God they don't smell as well'.
The Twain quotes are funnier and less offensive.

Re: Quote

Who said the famous "gentleman is someone who can play the flute... and doesn't"? Was it Mark Twain too? (I've heard that applied to all sorts of instruments, by the way.)

Re: Quote

Yes indeed, that was the well-traveled Samuel Clemens as well. It would be interesting to find out what instrument exactly he used the first time. The banjo was the first one I heard...

Banjo

I especially like the story about the guy who had to stop at a roadside gas station to purchase supplies. After a few minutes, he realized with horror! that he had left his prized banjo exposed, on the back of the truck. He ran back to the truck, and when he got there, he saw that his worst fear had become true... three other people had dumped banjos on his truck.

:-)
Sorry (i actually like banjo).

Slagging time

Yeah, you know what accordion players use for prophylactics, don't you?

Their personalities!

And you know what the loveliest sound in the world is, right?

When you throw the accordion in the dumpster and it lands on top of the banjo! :)

Re: Quote

Physics Question:

If you drop a banjo and an accordion off the roof of a 10-story building which one will hit the ground first?

Who cares

More slagging

What do you call an accordion player with an answering machine?

An optimist.

Accordions and banjos are the coolest instruments ever!

Re: Quote

Meaning they should all be put on ice? *grin* Don't go taking us wrong here, Box -- I happen to like both box and banjo. Just a little slagging to spice up the session.
