Sean McLaughlin, Armoy, Co Antrim (The Shadow)

Sean McLaughlin, Armoy, Co Antrim (The Shadow)

Just stumbled across two sets Played by Sean McLaughlin and completely dumbfounded. Simply stunning musician.

The sets are on the Seoltai Seidte collection released last year by Gael Linn, "The Earl's Chair/Tom Steele" and "Rhattigan's/Mrs McLeod's".

Anybody out there aware if McLaughlin made any other recordings? I'd love to get my mitts on them, if so!

Aidan - you should maybe ask "Ptarmigan" through the site. I'm sure he wrote a tune called "The Shadow", naming it after him.

Sean McLaughlin was a brilliant fiddler, and a good painter.I have a nice painting of Portballantrae he did.Sean McGuire called him `the man from Laramie`and they were good pals.McGuire reckoned that McLaughlin was the best fiddler in the county bar none.I think he died in Swansea quite a few years ago.

Re: Sean McLaughlin, Armoy, Co Antrim (The Shadow)

Hello der,
Sorry guys 'n gals, nearly missed this one.
Writing from Armoy myself, I should know more about this man, but it is work in progress.
I do know that he made a number of, I believe, 78 recordings in E P form, something you young chaps might not remember?!?!
He was a real character. There is a great story in an old Treoir about him travelling to Donegal to meet up with John Doherty & some musical Dude frae the deep south, Galway I think?
There is another local tale about him borrowning a Fiddle for a competition & hanging on to it for ages. When he was forced to return it, he handed it back to the man who owned it, who wasn't actually a musician, saying " here, you can have your fiddle, but I hae the tunes!!
I know Dominic McNabb, in Ballycastle, has his recordings & you could contact him through the Sean's Glens of Antrim Website.
Good Luck
P.S. I understand Sean McGuire is very poorly.
Get well soon Sean!

Re: Sean McLaughlin, Armoy, Co Antrim (The Shadow)

Dick ... many thanks for this. I reproduced Ciaran Carson's story about The Shadow on Pay The Reckoning, in order to give Last Night's Fun a further bit of publicity and to give people an opportunity to sample Carson's writing style.

The story can be read here http://www.paythereckoning.com/RantsandRaves.html#carson

I'll contact Dominic and ask for his help.

In the meantime, many thanks for the information!! You're a solid man!
