Re: Box Players

Mmmm... great band!! think they're playing at Tonder festival in Denmark in August, looking forward to seeing them. Think the guitarist in my band may know some of them?? might check that out...

Re: Box Players

Yeah - ask if any of them belong to the session - under the name north cregg - they are a brilliant band....also ask if they are planning to play in galway - flying to denmark is a bit extreme to see any band :-)

Re: Box Players

Fair point, i think they are from Cork though, is that far from Galway? (i'm in Glasgow, but am from NZ, not that thats any excuse for my appalling geography!) May end up trying to meet some fellow sessioners (not sure if thats the right name!) if i get down to Ireland this year! must try and remember where your all from! :0)

Re: Box Players

Have just looked at a map and i can confirm catagorically that yes, Cork is indeed closer to Galway than Denmark is. Clever arn't I..... :0)

Re: Box Players

# Posted on May 29th 2002 by bb

Denmark

It's inside Europe. I'm fairly certain of that.

Re: Box Players

Re: Box Players

bb, you're not an American, are you? I thought it was only us Americans who had awful geography skills. :)

I once toured with a young woman who actually asked, as we drove out of Needles, California, whether we had to go through another state to get to Pennyslvania. There was a brief silence after she asked as everyone tried to decide how to answer her, and then Jane, a former school teacher, gently said, "More like an entire country, C---..." Of course, this was the same woman who thought that the Maritimes were a group of cities around Maryland, and was excited that we were visiting Quebec because she hadn't realized the tour was going overseas. :)

Denmark

It's up north, where people like their "O"s with slashes through them. It sits atop Germany, West of Sweden, South of Norway and East of the UK (but with a lot of water between: the North Sea.

Re: Box Players

No Zina, I'm not American. But I have awful geography all the same. Guess northcregg answered our questions - he is neither in the band nor does he know where Cregg castle is :-))

Re: Box Players

Cregg Castle is in Galway -- it's owned and run by the Brodericks, he's a piper (nephew of the great Vincent Broderick, and some say his successor), she's a bodhran player, and they have music there most nights. :)

# Posted on May 30th 2002 by bb

Re: Box Players

Re: Box Players

Cregg Castle is a 17th century (1648) fortified castle that Anne Marie and Pat Broderick have turned into...well, it's not exactly a hotel, and it's not exactly a guesthouse or B&B...but it's a lovely place. It's about nine miles north of Galway City near Corrandulla. The music isn't session or gigs, it's breaking out the instruments for a few tunes of an evening with everyone sitting round the room and up the stairs with a glass of wine or such.

You can find them at http://indigo.ie/~creggcas/ for more info. My husband and I wanted to stay there on our honeymoon, but they were having a family reunion and so there wasn't room -- but Anne Marie still invited us up for a few tunes anyway. Regrettably, we couldn't make it. Pat Broderick is an excellent piper, and I really wish we could have.

Re: Box Players

Hiya, i think the box player is the member of the band that my guitarist knows! would be strange if you guys new each other too! His names Sean O'Donnel, from Derry, lives in Glasgow now tho!

(boy has this thread gone off on a tangent)
And as for bad geography, i have to say that i've met a few americans that thought new zealand was the little island off the bottom of australia (Tasmania!) Still i dont know much about american Geography so can't complain! Ciao All

Re: Box Players

A lot of us Yanks usually seem to think that NZ and Oz are right next to each other, too, Jamie -- you know, just a short hop away, c'mon. :) Of course, you may know the old saying: The difference between an Irishman/Englishman (use whichever you like) and an American is that the American thinks that a 100 years is a long time -- the Irishman thinks that a 100 miles is a long way.

It's true, too. We stayed in Corofin for a few weeks a year ago, and everyone kept warning us that it was in the middle of nowhere, it was terribly far from Ennis (where we were meeting people), that it'd take us forever to get there from Shannon, people described terrible knuckle-whitening drives on the Ennis and Corofin roads. We were warned not to drive up at night, too.

We were surprised, therefore, that it took under two hours to arrive in Corofin from Shannon, and had to drive back into Ennis and wander around town a bit before we could check into our cottage because we got there too early. And the drive from Corofin into Ennis was roughly about the same as our commute into work every day -- less if you didn't get behind a truck or something.

What most first time visitors to America remark about the States and its geography is how BIG it is. Our largest states can take over 24 hours to drive through. If you drive straight through with only gas stops and switching off drivers, it takes about three days and two nights to drive from coast to coast, and that's only because of the interstate highway system. It explains a lot about the infamous American provincialism if you realize that an American can easily travel thousands and thousands of miles every year and never leave the country. :)

Re: Box Players

yeah did you know I thought LA was in the top left corner of America directly across from New york... I told an american girl I met the other week - she thought it was hilarious (it was one of those you had to be there things) ;-))

Re: Box Players

That's all right, bb, I grew up on the West Coast, and on my first tour it took me forever to stop referring to Ohio and Indiana and Illinois and such as "back East", which anyone from the Midwest thinks is hilarious as well. *grin*
