Titanic music

Titanic music

In the film "Titanic", there is a scene below the decks which is meant to be an irish ceidlih. They play a couple of really good tunes which I have heard before and can play, but dont know the names of. Can anyone help me in that aspect?

PS. In the style of jimbobs, any folkies based in mersyside???

Re: Titanic music

The band is Gaelic Storm according to the liner notes of the CD the set is Drowsy Maggie/Blarney Pilgrim. I was just listening to that Gaelic Strom album then I come here and look what happens.

Re: Titanic music

There was a similar question asked back in December 2001. The discussion thread was “Titanic Set Session Tunes” http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display.php/245.
The tunes identified in that thread were Blarney Pilgrim, Rakish Paddy John Ryan’s Polka, Drowsy Maggie, and The Kesh.

Re: Titanic music

Some fairly unusual tunes, then ..

Re: Titanic music

Mark! Go and stand in the corner. Any more sarcastic remarks and we'll make you play Danny Boy.

Hangs head in shame...

Re: Titanic music

I must be the only person who hasn't seen the movie. Are the tunes in question on the soundtrack CD or on a Gaelic Storm CD?? From what I've heard, Eric Rigler was the piper.

Re: Titanic music

On a VERY pedantic note it was interesting to see that the fiddler had adjustable tuners on his tail piece. These did not exist in 1912 and indeed metal E strings were only developed in the 20s I believe.

The bodhran with Guinness written on it was a bit poor too (OK I made that up) ....but was the bodhran even played in Irish music then?

Appalling research. I stopped watching immediately.
I knew how it ended any way.

Yours

Re: Titanic music

I'm going to ruin it for you even if Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells isn't going to, Fel.

The boat sank.

Sorry.

Re: Titanic music

I don't recommend going out and getting a Gaelic Storm CD in search of these tunes. The way they play is pretty much what you'd get if you just played the notes straight off the sheet music, which is all available for free download right here.

Re: Titanic music

Goodness, there sure are a lot of experts out of work.

Re: Titanic music

Actually, Tunes!, a lot of us experts ARE at work. We're just not working. ;) And of course, there's the time zone differences. What time is it in London right now, Conán? (If you're at home right now, you wanderer you.)

Re: Titanic music

Zina it's almost 6pm over here. The question is, why am I still at work. OK then, gotta go!

All the best

Can you believe we're getting PAID for this? It's glorious!

Re: Titanic music

Geoff -- like you, I'm always noticing this sort of thing in movies. For example; why do almost all the space aliens speak perfect English? Why do people driving in cars have lights coming out of their dashboards and blinding them at night? Why doesn't anyone ever get interrupted when they're trying to say something? Why does everyone in the movies wake up in the morning looking so good? -- Things like that. My wife always says, "Shut up, you're wrecking the movie."

Re: Titanic music

Geoff, I've just discovered that you are taking my lad to Lake Tahoe skiing - may God have mercy upon your soul(!)
Sorry, I know this is a trifle off-topic, but I've just had an envelope with your name scrawled on thrust under my nose, which was a bit weird, as your name was also on the screen in front of me on this thread..... Freaky! The world gets smaller every day.

Re: Titanic music

Lake Tahoe, not Colorado, you'll note, dammit. I grew up visiting Lake Tahoe every year, and I once went down the Weasel run long before I was really ready for it - I ended up going down a bobsled run, which is a story and a half right there.

Gonna bring your fiddle again, Geoff? Funny, I didn't realize that Mark's son was one of your students, did you tell me that and I just forgot?

Re: Titanic music

Zina, I assume he doesn't know. - I had no idea until 2 minutes ago that Geoff taught at my lad's college - I thought he worked at a different one! Unless there are two Geoff Pollitt's, both of whom take students skiing to the US....

Re: Titanic music

Surely not!

Hmmmm. Lake Tahoe, Lake Tahoe...wonder if I can get away?

"Any more sarcastic remarks and we'll make you play Danny Boy."

Ya know, it really is a shame about that whole "Danny Boy" thing, because there's actually a lot of fine arse in London.

As it is, I have to shamefacedly sneak off to a sound proofed closet to examine it in any detail.

Re: Titanic music

We started playing "Danny Boy" recently. The big problem is other people in the pub start enjoying themselves, and feel included in the music. Obviously we are not really traditional

Re: Titanic music

I thought it was "fine arts". No wonder I was so disappointed with the place!

Re: Titanic music

I would just like to mention that after a free gig at Penn State Gaelic Storm showed up at a party at my house. And they were super stuck-up and fairly boring.

Re: Titanic music

Good grief!

I have only just caught up with this.
Yes Mark! It is I.
Fortunately there is only one of me and I will be in Tahoe over half term. I hadn't realised it was your son. Spooky. Will you be bringing him over to college the day we go?

Zina I will be taking the fiddle. I was hoping to meet Jack in San Francisco as I will be there in Thursday night of Feb 17th but I don't think that that is session night. If any one wants to come over to Tahoe (it is a bit of a hike admittedly), or SF, it will be great to see them. Email me if you want directions to hotel.

Re: Titanic music

If you are n the east bay on Feb 20, Todd Denman and Leo Rickard are going to perform at Freight and Salvage as part of the San Francisco Pipers Club Tionol.

Skiing- mmm....

Re: Titanic music

Good grief indeed!
For it is he - the hairy one!
He won't be taking his instrument, methinks, as it is a double bass and will not fit into the overhead locker, or under the seat.....
I'll see you when I drop him off.
Mark

Re: Titanic music

Hilarious. The kids apparently thought it was dorky-cool when we played a session in the middle of a very wide hallway in Colorado. You ought to bring the flute along with you, Mark, and embarass the hell out of your son by insisting on a tune with Geoff before they leave. Heh.

Re: Titanic music

I wish I was going! So far I've only got 2 skiing breaks planned this year(!) ;-)

Boom! Boom, baby! Taught the little vulpes everything he knows, but not everything *I* know.

Re: Titanic music

The music is on the second Gaelic Storm album. I don't know about the adjustable tuner, but I thought the bodhran was first invented for drinking Guinness. Not true?
