I've been playing whistle for about 9-10 months now. I don't have many reels in my tune book though. Can you recommend some reels for me to start with? What are your favorites or session favorites? (preferably tunes that I can get from this website). Thanks!!!!!
I'd use a Reddington 5 wt reel or maybe one of the Orvis models- large mouth bass in Texas seem to like a size 12 wooly bugger. Probably an 8 wt rod to go with a 12 wooly buigger, 4X tippet, 7 foot long so the presentation is quiet
Oh tunes, ....so sorry- fly fishing and uilleann pipes the combo boggles the mind...uh.. connacht hiefers
Aw, well, justwhistle, you can blame Will Harmon for that one. At one point or another, a bunch of us inveigled him into writing us a bunch of personal ads, they were hilarious, and mine sounds so much more interesting than I, in actual fact, am.
I'm trying to remember who's down in the DFW area -- will get back to you maybe tomorrow, I'm brain dead! Must...go...to...bed...
Reels I like? Silver Spear, Dunmore Lasses, the Otter's Holt, Toss the Feathers (E minor version), and Merry Blacksmith...all tunes that work well on whistle.
"I'd use a Reddington 5 wt reel or maybe one of the Orvis models"
I seem to be stuck on Ross, even though I grew up on the Battenkill just about 5 miles from the Orvis factory. Come to think of it I've got a couple of Sage rods, but don't have an Orvis. I've got one of Wes' South Bend cane jobbers though, which is kinda like owing a Lampredi designed Fiat and thinking of it as a Ferrari (I've done that too).
I have to admit I'm clueless as to what key the reels are in. Maybe I should tie on a Wooly Bugger and go find out.
In another couple of months.
KFG
P.S. I'd actually been meaning to ask if Kerri and Zina had the same ghost writer working for them. Now I know.
What have I done??? Zina, when did you meet Eoin? I met him in Cork when I was there. I've fished with a wooly bugger in the surf In El Segundo where I used to work.
KFG- it would be better if it was a Jano designed Fiat- twin plug, twin distributor but still won't start. Oops, isn't that a Lancia?? I would like to own a Sage 2 wt and a Sage 4 piece 5 wt
We brought the Scoiltrad (now sadly defunct) lads out to Colorado when they first started the venture. I interviewed them for the Celtic Cafe just before they appeared here, and Eoin asked if he could go fly fishing. Sadly, there was no time and it was November, so no go -- although i understand that there's fishing in Colorado somewhere almost all year round, woolly bugger or no.
Eoin is one of the best, that's for sure, what a great guy and a lovely piper, with a wicked sense of humor. He hates cats, but nobody's perfect. ;)
What made Will's personal ads for us all so funny was that he took little bits of what he knew about us and blew them all up out of any proportion at all, so if you know anything about me, the thing is REALLY silly instead of just mildly amusing.
Kerri, on the other hand, is funny on her own merits.
My nephews-in-law ( my wife's sister's daughter and her husband) just moved to Colorado Springs... Is that close?? fiddle, pipes, fly rod, my road bike...looks like pig heaven to me
Closer to the fishing, and only an hour or so from Denver, so that'd be great! I don't know the sessions down there, but Eric Olson (piper, d'you know him?) lives down near there too and should be able to give us the scoop.
I've met Eric up at the Seattle Tionol a year ago; he decamped with Seth Gallagher and was scrapping reeds like a mad man. Nice fella- was very helpful to some of the others that had reed death written all over their face.
It would be weird to live somewhere called, "Boulder not Colorado Springs." Why wouldn't the name just say where it IS instead of where it isn't? Weird.
MadForTrad has a CDrom Tutorial for Tinwhistle with close up video of the finger placements. It has a set of basic reels. I have a friend that picked up Tinwhistle quickly this way and then her daughter is doing the same. Best Wishes.

Re: Reel Recommendations
Where are you in Texas? Maybe we can recommend some reels that are pretty common round where you are at area sessions.
Other than that, learn the ones you like, preferably starting with ones that you already know.

Re: Reel Recommendations
Hi Zina. You have one of the most interesting and creative profiles I've ever read in my life. Very funny. I'm in the Dallas area of Texas.

Woolly bugger! You're the second person who's ever mentioned that fly that I know of, Fel -- Eoin O'Riabaigh was the first.

Re: Reel Recommendations
The problem with Zina's profile is that it says nothing about HER. Except that she's a nutbucket. Or maybe Will's the nutbucket.

Too many to recommend, but I've been randomly putting the tunes which aren't too common in my website. It might help: http://slainte.web.infoseek.co.jp/common_en.html

Re: Reel Recommendations
Good whistle reels to start out with:

Boys of the Lough
Greenfields of Rossbeigh
Wind that Shakes the Barley
The Green Mountain
Reel of Rio
Jack, once you get to really know Zina, her bio is more revealing than first appears....

So is The Wooley Bugger the name of a reel? Kind of catchy, don't you think?

Oh, and Fel, now you gotta come out to Colorado, because one of Dirk's best friends is one of the best fishing guides in Southern Colorado.
